Hollywood may be the first place people think of when they think of big screen productions, but while it's considered the focal center of the film industry, some of the most unique and imaginative movies don't originate from a Hollywood studio, or even garner a release in the United States.

This is awesome. I have seen posters for Tale of Tales everywhere. Someone actually told me it wasn't very good so I want going to save it for when I needed a night to relax with a semi terrible movie and wine. 😁
I am curious about Tale of tales, I 've read a lot of bad and good about it. It looks like a film you love or hate and I wonder which one it will be ^^
I saw Time Crimes at the Nevermore Film Festival in Durham, NC. And saw City of Lost Children via Netflix. Both were definitely worth watching. That they are on this list inspires me to look for the rest of them.
Thanks for this! I have just enough viewing time with the rest of summer vacation to get most of these in!
I think the year for the Brazilian Capoeira film is wrong. It can't be set in the 1920s because slavery was already abolished in Brazil by then. It probably means 1820s, judging by the costumes.
Seems like there are lot of HK/Chinese films in this list. I have in fact seen the "Detective Dee" movie and it was pretty great. I liked its attention to detail in bringing the Tang Dynasty to life, despite its fantastical elements. Detective Dee (or more accurately Judge Dee) is actually a rather popular fictional character in China (he's like the Chinese Sherlock Holmes). He first appeared in an 18th century Chinese detective novel and is based on the historical Tang Dynasty official Di Renjie. The empress Wu Zetian in the film is also a historical personage and a rather controversial figure in Chinese history.
There was on Netflix for awhile a Chinese version of "Mulan." I totally recommend that one because it gives a more realistic story than the American disneyfied version.
I think I will have to check out "Detective Dee"!
If you're talking about the 2009 film starring Zhao Wei, I've seen that one too. Also a great film, and much closer to the original story than the Disney film. The focus on the romantic and emotional aspects might be a bit off-putting to American audiences who are used to more action-oriented war films. I didn't really like the ending that much, though. I think it tried too hard to make the ending bittersweet and push the "duty over love" angle.
