A Surfeit of Emeralds: Healthcare in the Middle Ages - Charlie's Diary
There's a lot of concern about health care on both sides of the pond these days, with the recent worries about the National Health Service, and regime change in America bent on rolling back the benefits his predecessor put in place.
Do you guys have any favorite examples of books that have characters with knowledge of medical practices? Or are you writing a book where one of your characters is a doctor? DO you incorporate fantasy into the remedies or stick with the science?
It is on my mind since I am reading the Stormlight Archives by Brandon Sanderson and one of the main characters, Kaladin, was raised by a surgeon.

Pretty cool post, especially what Charles said about honey being an antiseptic. I had to study honey's medicinal properties for my second novel, Commanding The Swarm. Silvan (M.C.) got stuck in the wilderness near the end and needed to produce antiseptic with only the wild at his disposal.
Charles' whole bit about Sanguine, Bilious, and Phlegmatic was interesting too. He must have had a lot of fun researching to write The Dark Apostle series.
This is actually a guest post by EC Ambrose and not one of Stross's own writings.
Used the wrong name. That's called a brain fart, heh.
