Steven Spielberg at Cannes: "The Worse the World Gets, the More Magic We Have to Believe In"
On Saturday, Steven Spielberg appeared at the Cannes Film Festival to premiere The BFG, his adaptation of the Roald Dahl novel that returns the Oscar-winning filmmaker to the magical realm of children's cinema he mostly left after 1982's E.T.
I know this isn't traditional fantasy but he does talk about the importance that the genre has when dealing with the realities of the world.
“All of us have to believe in magic,” the filmmaker responded. “Because that magic will give us hope. That hope will cause us to be proactive. And when we have the wherewithal to help, it will put us in a position to get very proactive in a world that needs our attention more than it ever has.”
“The worse the world gets, the more magic we have to believe in,” Spielberg continued. “Hope comes from magic and I think that’s what movies can give people. They can give people hope that there will be a reason to fight on to the next day. Hope is everything to me.”
