I've always wondered this about other writers.

I'm curious. What first drew you to the genre/genres you write in? And are your tastes as a reader different to your leanings as a writer?

If I consider only what I write for pleasure for myself, I think I read far more widely than I write.

Illustrated books (I trained in making artists' books as part of a fine art degree), poetry, scifi and fantasy is what I love to make best of all.

But what I've been paid to write is a more motley crew of technical research, non-fiction essays, speeches, librettos and ghost written thriller fiction.

I have a friend who is trying to persuade me to marry my lit degree with my technical thang. But I am not yet wowed by the proposal of a high-tech thriller in which there is more machine than machinations. I need to stew on it a bit more.

In general, I read and write the same genres. I do read more widely than I write in terms of themes, tropes, cast constallations, but genre-wise it's pretty similar. So what drew me to the genres is really just that I enjoy them and I want to write the sort of books I'd enjoy reading.

I loooooved ghost stories as a kid. And while I don't write ghost stories, I think what I loved about them was this fantastical element that made everything feel more magical and exciting, and anything could happen. So that might be what got me into writing fantasy stuff at the very, very earliest?

Interesting answers! I personally write a mix of fantasy and historical fiction, but I read mostly historical fiction (I'll read anything, really). I think what got me to write fantasy was the fact that I kept picking up fantasy novels and being very disappointed. I love the genre, but I always found myself wanting more. I guess I got so picky that I decided to write the kind of fantasy that I wanted (mingled with historical fiction, of course ;). Awesome post.

I have loved fantasy novels since high school. sure I read other genres, but when I write, it's either fantasy or romance...or more accurately, both.

I read fantasy, romance, and mystery. the occasional SF. other genres fail to move me.

I read and write eclectically. I enjoy reading both plotty and literary stuff, but I'm not good at writing plotty stuff. I'd say my reading and story consumption tastes are definitely reflected in what I write.

I originally intended to write a children's book. I'd been telling my kids bed time stories for years, but when I started writing it got pretty dark. Damn those characters and their free will 😁

Stephen King's books influenced me a great deal, as well as did Anne McCaffrey books on Pern, love dragons! Also enjoy stories of magic, and the supernatural. I also like to write about magical beings and places, as well as about shapeshifters.
