I would love to talk about books. So I think a "bookclub" is a great idea!
I probably wouldn't be able to take part very often but it sounds good so I said yeah. :)
I respect this and I respect your yeah!
If your going to do a book club might want to see if you can partner with /fantasy on it? I would be interested though depending on what is involved.
A partnership with fantasy could be interesting, especially if they had great Solarpunk recommendations (in fact, it could be awesome to partner with /Solarpunk too!). However, I would be more interested in reading non-fiction books that talk about a humanist, technological future. For example:
Are there specific fantasy books you'd want to be reading, that you think relate to Future DIY?
I havent read those books yet, they do look interesting. I was thinking of some books like some of Phillip K Dick books or books after an apocalypse where they had to rebuild when you where talking about a book club.
Oh, definitely! One that could be really good to read, too, is the Dispossessed, by Ursula K. Leguin. I personally would love to read novels set after an apocalypse if the focus is on the rebuilding and the alternate communities. I ultimately would want to discuss things that are hopeful and actionable.
I see the vibe of a fdiy bookclub as similar to taking your computer to a repair cafe: You want someone to help you understand what could be wrong and how you can fix it. You don't want someone to point at an even more busted computer and go, "you think your machines bad? Look at this horrible mess, isn't that interesting?!"
Hmm, so I misunderstood the types of books but the way you explain it sounds interesting. Have you ever read Hackers- Heroes of the computer revolution or Where Wizards stay up late ? Those 2 books might be a good place to start, cover the history of technology and how we got to where we are then move on from there to the other books you listed.
I had not heard of these books and these are perfect! They are so up my alley, and I think learning more about the past helps you understand how we got to the present and how we can guide the future. In other words, internet history is a large portion of a diy future.
But this is just my opinion, and I'd love to read any other books that people think of when they think "Future DIY Bookclub". It could be fantasy, sci-fi, comics, non-fiction, or a combination of all of the above!
Thank you!
