Comment notifications
I've not often received enough comments on a post to work out if this is a bug or intended behaviour, but when I came back to a post I'd made earlier, I found that there were comments I hadn't been notified of.
Edit: here is a specific post I know this happened on, I got no notification of any of phix's comments or of any of the back and forth they had with pipsy.
I've always assumed that if you are following a post then you would be notified of every comment left on it. What seems to be happening is only direct replies to the post are notified, not when someone replies to someone else's comment on the post.
I am used to being notified of every reply, whatever level of threading they are at on other sites, and having to click follow on every comment left in case someone else replies is a bit of a hassle, and obviously not something that is immediately obvious you would need to do in order to get notifications.
On a related note, being able to be notified of every comment made in a community you lead would be a useful tool as well as maybe a feed in the dashboard?

Yeah this is designed behaviour, sorry! You can also follow individual comments, to see replies to those.
And yeah I agree with you about a "new comments" type feed for community leaders. That would be a useful feature :)
It's not very helpful behaviour though? As I say, if I'm following a post it's because I want to see every comment that's made, at whatever level of threading.
And clicking the button to follow on each new comment is a very clunky solution, and not immediately obvious that you would need to do this as Follow implies getting notified for every comment - it's taken me since August to realise that this is a problem.
Yeah I see what you mean. I think we did it that way because it was the way we were used to at reddit, but I'll mention it to @Kaela and see what she thinks.
Ah, I have no idea how stuff like that works on Reddit - I come from Livejournal where you would be notified for every comment on a post you've made and Tumblr/Twitter where you are notified for every like, reply and reblog/retweet.
I just don't like the idea I've been missing things because the behaviour of notifications is unintuitive.
I really agree with this. I definitely see the value in making it possible to 'shallow follow', but 'deep following' is pretty much the central feature I strongly feel the lack of. I keep missing interesting comments, trying to figure out complex workarounds, etc.
Good to know, thanks anon donna.
'shallow following' can start being a nice feature when you get stuff like 200 comment long threads where various subthreads have gone off on different subjects entirely. So I definitely do see the value in being able to avoid getting swamped with that, or being able to unfollow a subthread.
I'd just really, really like to be able to do a deep follow when I do want to.
I wasn't aware that it was possible to follow comments! I'd like a deep follow option too.
That's what I've noticed to. If they mention you in a comment to another user, then you get notified - but, otherwise, there is no notification.
Is this still happening? I noticed it once or twice recently but I figured it was because of some changes I had made to my account.
As I say, I don't get enough comments to fully test, as mostly a long comment thread on one of my own posts is just me and another person back and forth so I get those notifications because they are replying to my comments.
I've had only a couple of times where someone replies to someone else on my post and I'm fairly certain no notification came through.
Hmm I will have to watch for it myself.
I have requested the ability to follow all several times. I still want it.
I'm pretty sure the email notification says it will only notify the frist time?
I don't have email notifications on mostly because of the fact that it was just the first comment and the disparity with push notifications was frustrating - push notifications are for every comment except as I have highlighted in my post.
Oh and when they say first time they mean you'll get the email notification for my previous comment but not for this one even though it is still a reply to your comment.
I get it now; sorry, I misread something in your post!
No worries :)
