'Embracing our girl power:' Movie chain doubles down on ladies-only Wonder Woman screenings

  • North America

Critics decry ladies-only Wonder Woman screenings as cinema chain adds more

The Alamo Drafthouse movie chain said this week it's "embracing our girl power" with women-only screenings of Wonder Woman at least two theatres in the U.S., but the move has left some men angry at being left out.

I'm as strong a feminist as there is, but I don't understand the logic behind a females-only screening. Can't a "regular" screening be held with all the proceeds still going to the local women's shelter? Would the important message still not be communicated? What's the point in excluding male viewers, especially when including them would earn more money? There are many ways to fight for women's equality, but this is a weak one.

The movie's meant - at least in part - to be a celebration of women, which almost always draws the ire of non-women in a big way. Who wants to watch a movie when there's some jackass scoffing loudly in the back of the theatre, let alone when that movie is one you think is very important.

When I was at university in Toronto, my school hosted a small meeting for students and faculty to discuss racialization and their experiences with it; two white members of the press showed up and were asked to leave when the organizers discovered they'd come to report on the meeting. It was a big deal because the school's very diverse and the white students there have a tendency to spout "SJW" when things don't go their way, but then the incident made it to Reddit and shit hit the fan. Folks got so incensed that non-white people wanted to not be harassed or observed like animals that it gripped all mention of the city for a brief period. In essence, this is the same thing: some women would rather attend a screening of the film where everyone knows the deal and there's no gamble as to whether or not some jackass is going to be there pulling all the same ridiculous bullshit that women have to put up with in any public space or, worse yet, is going explicitly to put down anybody that attended the film unironically.

If nothing else, the Alamo Drafthouse has gone and shown that things like this are necessary because so many people - even many who fully support equality between the sexes - still don't get why moderate self-segregation is still important. You might not be that guy, but there are going to be plenty of people out there who will be and some women are just so exhausted with putting up with that guy they'd rather just not chance running into him.

        Female here.

"Who wants to watch a movie when there's some jackass scoffing loudly in the back of the theatre, let alone when that movie is one you think is very important."

" . . . and there's no gamble as to whether or not some jackass is going to be there pulling all the same ridiculous bullshit . . . "

Is that really going to happen, though, at a movie featuring a female in a strong, leading position? I've virtually never in my entire life experienced this, not that it hasn't happened or, at least, that there are men who hate strong female leads, but I've never encountered that nastiness, and there are many movies featuring women in fighting roles. I'm just so surprised this is that much of a problem that a segregated screening is necessary. It's really unfortunate.

It's happened more than a few times at theatres in my hometown, and that's southern Ontario. You're right: it's ridiculous and extremely unfortunate.
