Daily Chat Thread, Partie LII: Being In Total Control Happily
12:14 - Anarchisteve: You may enjoy a film called Libertarias, if you can find it. It is a Spanish film that tells the story of some women anarchists during the Spanish civil war.
12:15 - Romanophile/Romanófilo: Sounds exciting!
Quote of the day:
‘You are talking out your ass, if you want to debate with people go to r/anarchism101 or r/debateanarchism. This space is for debate just solely between anarchists. Why does literally every space have to allow fascists, conservatives &c. into it?
That is the real absurdity of your ‘freeze peaches’ argument. There are almost infinite spaces in existence for anarchists to interact with opposing ideologies, it's called pretty much almost every second of every fucking day. When you walk down the street, probably almost nobody you walk past agrees with you.
Why can’t there be one space for anarchists only? The reason why is because manarchists like you (no offense l0l) are so fucking privileged that you make an issue as irrelevant as ‘free speech’ on reddit your crusade. One of the best things about free speech advocates is that usually they have nothing to say other than ‘my freeze peaches’. Even if we did not censor your blatantly sexist or ableist posts you would still have fuck all to say.
Also, you use ‘crazy’ as an insult, which is really offensive to myself and others. If you want to continue discussing this you need to refrain from using terms like that.’ (source)

I wonder if there'll ever be an imzy bot that can automatically make posts so you wouldn't have manually do these every day lol
on a more serious note, I haven't been too great lately. I've been feeling really disconnected from everything and generally just at the loss of willpower. only way that I'm really able to deal with it right now is just talking online about it but I can't say that its helped much, it just puts those thoughts into the world. no one IRL is actually going to do anything about it. I honestly get tired of doing it but I don't have a lot of options
I've been meaning to watch that film for a while.
On the topic of insults, what are some better alternatives to 'crazy'? I'm not into the linguistics element of SJ, so you'll have to bear with me.
Is it merely the word 'crazy' being linked to mental illness that makes it unsavoury? Would this also apply to 'deranged', 'demented', 'out of your mind' , 'non compos mentis', etc?
I'd like to know what the acceptable limits are, because I'm a fan of using a wide vocabulary. These ruminations also cross over into gendered slurs, because I know quite a lot of epithets that also describe one's gender.
'Harridan', 'virago', 'bint', etc.
If I wished to negatively portray someone who happened to female, whether they were a book villain or a politician like Pauline Hanson, should I avoid derogatory words such as these that also indicate their gender? Is the issue with gendered slurs that they insinuate the woman-ness is the problem? Sorry for the 20 Questions, but this has been simmering in my mind for a long time.

Various words can be used depending on the context, like ‘serious’ (‘Are you serious‽’) or ‘dangerous.’
You can use slurs and misogynous misbehaviour and whatnot, but it would be inappropriate to associate them with heroism à la James Bond. If you are writing a story based on the modern world, the theme of social injustice would have to come up sooner or later, so such things would be necessary.
Basically: use discrimination (if you wish), but do not portray it as something admirable or perfectly acceptable. Otherwise, it’s sending a foul message to people.
