Daily Chat Thread, Partie XXVII: La Câlineuse

Discuss whatever, like how you are feeling.
I in particular feel a bit ‘cold’ in the chest, for the lack of better word. It’s not exactly a dolorous sensation; it’s just something noticeable for me. I learnt several months ago that there is a ‘leak’ in my heart. Not a leak like a pipe or a faucet; some of my blood gets pushed back in the flow. I have no idea if it’s possible to feel that, because it’s probably been occurring for many years.
Quote of the day:
‘Women are never like “wow I have a son I respect men now” like… it’s just expected of us, from the moment we can speak, from the moment we can understand words, even though they treat us like shit.
Women give birth to boys and have to worry about how these boys will grow up and treat women like that’s the difference men can be fathers of little girls and all of a sudden they’ve realized that women are people but mothers give birth to little boys and have to worry about every single outside force including their fathers making him an absolute shithead by the time they’re in the 5th grade!
Seriously, I got catcalled by a 10 year old boy the other day; did this little boy have sexual urges towards me? No, of course not, he was 10 years old, he probably doesn’t even know what a sexual urge is but he’s already learned that speaking this way to women is what makes him powerful and makes him a “man” and it is fuuuccccckkkkkked.’ (source)

Hey I'm always interested in reading your "quote of the day" but am also always curious the source. Would it be a pain to add a source in the future? Thanks for doing these daily discussion threads by the way. I don't often talk in them but I enjoy reading them :)
I always think this taz - I'd love to seeing sources and learning about new stuff! :)
Tout est accompli.
I, too, hope that your heart stays healthy.
I'd like to talk about why there is so much support for Hillary and so little support for Jill Stein, at least online, and especially on Reddit.
I haven't been back to Reddit for some time until this past weekend. I've noticed that all the "Bernie Bros" are virtually gone from the site. Any anti-Clinton post or comment will now be downvoted to Hell and any pro-Clinton comment or post will be upvoted. The people defending Clinton all tell me that they're former Sanders supporters, but no Samders supporter that I knew would have ever defended her in the way that these people are. Many of these people have accounts that are only a month or so old. It seems like there is something out of the ordinary going on.
And whenever anyone mentions Jill Stein, another strong female candidate who has been a progressive leader for decades, they inevitably demean her and make false accusations like saying she's "loony" and saying she's anti-vaccines or that she's scared of wifi or something, all of which are completely untrue if you actually know her.
Why would they be doing this? Hillary has no reason to be afraid of Jill. Jill's not going to win the election. There's no reason to send people to attack her online. She's one of the most outspoken progressive feminist voices in politics, fighting for what we all believe in for decades, and fighting against the male-dominated corporate influence in government while the Clintons have been doing the exact opposite!
I just don't understand all the hatred towards Jill. It's not logical.

Oh, so it's here too, then? I see.
So you don't think there's ANY possibility that Assange was setup by any number of powerful people who he has embarrassed and exposed over the years? Not possible at all? Really?
I mean, it's so freakin' obvious to anyone with any level of awareness of the stakes involved in what he does. It's such a cheap tactic to try to smear him and discredit him and his work.
And if it is ever proven, I'll be the first to say that he's a scumbag. But I will ALWAYS defend his work. We MUST ALWAYS fight against the powers that be and expose them for who they are at all times. It is imperative to human freedom. So whether it's Assange himself or someone else, I will always support those efforts.
I've also noticed that a lot of Pro-Clinton people on Reddit are also trying to discredit him now since he released the DNC emails, instead of talking about how obviously corrupt the DNC is.
Do you all really like Clinton's war mongering and ties to wall street that much that you're willing to still support her? Really?
What is your motivation?
And please don't respond with snark. I'm honestly trying to understand here.
There are things about Clinton I don't particularly like. I do think she's a bit too hasty about war. And I do think she's too in bed with Wall Street. There are also things I don't particularly like about Jill Stein. I don't thing GMOs are doom, and putting a moratorium on them could be a disaster for a lot of the world -- even if it doesn't affect the US much. I also can't quite figure out her stance on education (in lower levels). "Abolish Common Core" doesn't mean much. It also sounds very extreme. Common Core is a set of standards. Perhaps those standards need to be tweaked, and how we reach those standards might need to be changed, but just abolish them?
I'm in California. Clinton is going to win here even if I write in Mickey Mouse. But when I look at Clinton's overall platform -- not at her as an individual, the platform itself -- and Stein's overall platform. I agree with Clinton's more. And I know that things are going to change when she gets into office. They always do. But at the election stage, you vote with what's in front of you, and that's the platform. So I'm going with Clinton.
Bernie was anti-GMO as well. In fact, Vermont passed the most stringent GMO-Labeling law (similar to what is done in Europe), but now the new Obama "labeling" law (that was actually lobbied for BY General Mills) essentially makes the Vermont law illegal.
I think more study needs to be done on GMOs. If they're different enough that Monsanto can copyright them, why aren't they different enough to label and give people the choice of whether or not to buy them?
Here's what she thinks about Common Core:
It's a lot more nuanced than just "I don't like it".
Really? So you're a moderate. I can accept that. At least you're honest. I get nothing but snark at Reddit when I try to talk about this.
I know Bernie was anti-GMO. That was one of his stances I was against. And labeling GMOs is different than banning them altogether -- which is what she wants to do. And I'm pretty left of moderate, especially on a lot of economic and social issues. I don't think Clinton is as moderate as you seem to think she is. (Her running mate, OTOH...)
If you look at her platform and her actual website, all it says is "abolish Common Core". There's absolutely no nuance about it. Even the OnTheIssues quote doesn't clear up what she would do about it. Okay, so we just get rid of standards and let the schools and teachers decide. It also makes me think she doesn't really know much about Common Core since it was developed by teachers in the first place. So now what? As a parent with three kids who are all doing different things for schools (one's in a magnet charter, one is in an online home school, one is in a local public high school) I want to know what her plans are for education. This is important to me.
That's a good point. Well taken.
I don’t like Jill, Hillary, or any other candidate; I’m uninterested in pushing a political agenda. I posted the link because I felt like it was something valid to take into account.
Really? Because the anti-Jill/pro-Hillary people have been posting similar things, trying to discredit wiki leaks due to them releasing the DNC emails. As if the emails don't speak for themselves.
I don’t even know what the e‐mails are about; I never read them. I know that Hillary, like every candidate before her, is pro‐business. Jill presumably is as well, though to a lesser extent.
Wow... Ok, I really think you need to read up on Jill. Here's her running mate, Ajamu Baraka: https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ajamu_Baraka
That should tell you what you need to know about the Green Party. He's awesome.
Hmm, yeah, he seems pretty aware of modern issues like those in the Middle East and in the Obama administration, and has a decent grasp of social justice theory. The question is, how exactly would he solve domestic racial tension? He could push for better education on race, but I don’t know if there’s a reasonable chance of that succeeding, because he would probably have to deal with congress, public educators, and business owners.
And I’m just referring to his scope as a politician. I don’t have any reason to believe that any politician could ‘fix’ a country.
The part where she called Hillary a bad mother wasn't exactly the most feminist thing.
The anti-vaccine stuff was weird, and that was taking directly from tweets she said. Also like, I just can't get behind the idea of a "protest vote" for Stein in an election like this.
Do mothers wage war?
Jill has time and time again said that she is PRO-VACCINE!! What she's against is corporate influence in our regulatory agencies, which is rampant. And due to that corporate influence, it's understandable that some people might be skeptical of the drugs and products that make it through our regulatory agencies. That's what she's saying, and it's completely reasonable.
She's NEVER been anti-vaccine. Or at least no more anti-vaccine than Clinton and Obama were.
HILLARY CLINTON, 2008:
If that's not "pandering to the anti-vax" crowd (like what people are accusing Jill Stein of), then I don't know what it is.
And this is literally almost word for word what Jill has said, too.
Also, if you live in a swing state, I can see how you wouldn't want to risk your vote giving the election to Trump. But if you're in a firmly red or blue state, you should vote for the person who represents what you believe in.
And I don't think you believe in war, do you?
*edit: Also, this quote is troubling:
Yes, obviously ONLY those people worthy of support should be supported. The fact that they're female is irrelevant to their worthiness as a human being. The standards for being a good person are independent of your sex/gender.
Isn't Jill anti-autism, though? She's called it an "epidemic".
Obama and Clinton called it an epidemic in 2008, too.
What Jill has said about autism is the very same thing that Obama and Clinton said - more research needs to be done.
Her main driving force, however, is to get corporate influence out of our government agencies.
The Clinton campaign and the DNC have tried to twist her words to imply that Jill is anti-vaccinations when in fact she has repeatedly said she is very adamantly in FAVOR of vaccinations.
What she said is that she understands why some people are skeptical, due to the revolving door of industry/government, where industry lobbyists now run government agencies that are supposed to regulate those same industries.
I hope the valve leak is (and stays) very minor!
Which valve is it? Depending on the valve and the severity, most likely nothing needs to be done. It may have been happening all your life. (Source, mother of a kid with some major heart problems whose had multiple surgeries and procedures. And some of that is ignoring the fact that two of the valves have been replaced, they leak, and that's just what they do. And the mitral valve regurgitates, and as long as it stays mild-moderate, that's okay. My other two kids both have really loud murmurs that the cardiologists have dismissed as nothing to worry about. One of them is a leaking something.)
Worked at Les Mis all weekend with my kids' Youth Theater. None of mine were in it. Seriously one of the best productions I've seen. I'm not just saying that because I know the company either. These kids are good. It was the school production so some songs were cut down/lyrics altered, and Valjean and Javert were obviously much younger than you'd expect from an adult cast, but otherwise, this was a full-scale professional performance.
I’m not sure which valve it is; I’ll have to ask my mother or one of my doctors.
A few Decembers ago, I was planning on seeing Les Misérables with my uncle and sisters. Once we arrived at the theatre, it turned out that they were NOT playing it, so we were going to view The Hobbit instead, except that all of the good seats were taken. Now what? We went shopping, and it went on… and on… and on… and on. I also had to carry some of the items, which put me in even more pain.
I can’t remember the last time that I’ve had a good December. The last few ones were fairly tolerable I think, but only because my relatives decided to quit visiting our residence. I used to hear some call it ‘the best of the year,’ but for me it was always the exact opposite.
The movie sucks, don't bother.
I hate December as a month. Bah Humbug.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/aortic_regurgitation
She said, ‘I’m not sure which valve is involved with that. My first guess is that it’s a mitral valve.’
My son has mitral regurgitation, but yeah, same deal, different valve. His aortic and pulmonary are the leaky ones.
im so sick :(
