[Edit] Nevermind. Lol
Bash the fash!! 👊
I generally don't condone violence. But if there's anyone who deserves a good sock to the face, it's Richard Spencer.
Nazis would kill you and your family if given the chance.
Yes, that's why I'm not too upset about him getting a knuckle sandwich. But in a democratic society, violence is generally not an effective political strategy. Your opponents use the act of violence to justify retaliatory measures. See the Reichstag fire.
If neo-Nazis were actually out attacking or rounding up minorities and the authorities were doing nothing or actively abetting them, then we absolutely should arm ourselves and fight back. But punching one guy in the face gets you nowhere and may actually help their cause.
It can only help them if liberals defend Nazis. It is precisely the attitude of non-violence at all costs that helps the Nazis. When you preface your approval of this with "Well, violence is wrong" you are communicating that Nazis are deserving of safety and freedom. That their ideas of racism, ethnic cleansing, genocide are to be tolerated. That it is simply a difference of political opinion.
I'm not saying "violence is always wrong". I'm saying that violence is counterproductive in most cases. Far-right groups thrive on violence. They're itching for a fight. If you oblige them, you just give them the rhetorical ammo to galvanize their supporters. So you punch Dick Spencer in the face. Do you think he's going to go home and think, "Oh gee, I just got whacked real good. Maybe I should rethink my life and get out of the neo-Nazi business." No, he's going to play the victim card to his brownshirt cronies at NPI and rile them up.
Not that it matters much. Richard Spencer is pretty insignificant relative to the media attention he gets. You want to defeat him? Stop putting him in the news. And nothing gets more attention than "alt-right leader punched in face by masked man".
I'd be happy to see every Nazi become as publicly embarrassed as Spencer has today. Any galvanized Nazis are responsible for their own actions. Why shift the blame to the people fighting them, rather than the Nazis themselves? Like I said, if there's anyone to blame, it's Nazis and liberals who apologize for them in the name of idealist pacifism and freedom of speech.
i'm not really a violent person myself but that video is incredibly satisfying
First reaction: good. Second reaction: I'm not a pacifist, but I'm struggling with the idea using violence to send a message.
I did too, then I realized that this man wouldn't have a problem with killing my kids because they are Jewish. So yeah, can't say I feel too bad about it since he literally wants to kill people and he's walking free.
Vigilante justice is tricky to me because it often turns out to be hypocritical.
In addition it strengthens the resolve of the recipients, so it's also counterproductive. Like scratching a rash instead of using an ointment/medication.
I'm a New Yorker. I fucking love Jewish people. I have very violent thoughts towards neo-Nazis/White supremacists, but these feelings are not always in my best interests if their manifestation results in exacerbating the situation/social climate.

Also relevant. It's not really a question--for me personally-- of 'feeling bad' when an asshole gets punched
Ahh, this made me happy.
This was really satisfying
Punching nazis is now a meme and I'm glad.
