I have a canvas print of this hanging in my house:
I just happened to stumble upon it one day in a bookstore and didn't even recognize it as a Norman Rockwell at first, but it struck me and I just really liked it. So I went back a couple more times and stared at it, and then it finally ended up going on sale and I snatched it up immediately.
I really like the tone in it and the diversity of the people, and it feels like they all circle in towards an empty space in the middle where a person could be standing—he does a really fantastic job of this compositionally and the way he uses the color—but there's no one there. I like to image it's because that's where you, the viewer, are supposed to fit into the painting.
I've never seen this one! I absolutely love it!!
Yeah, I have no idea why it's not as well known. I guess because he's known as a classic "American" painter and this doesn't fit within his traditional genre? But it's definitely my favorite.
He did a few beautiful space-related pieces for Look magazine in the 60s, one of which had a unique form factor that I particularly like:
"Liftoff from the Moon"
The original is in the Smithsonian's Air and Space museum, which I would love to visit someday!
random fact: even though I studied Rockwell in art history classes in college, I discovered this piece through attending one of those cheesy art print auctions on a cruise ship several years later
Did you buy it???
No, the format of the auction was a little too wacky for me (very... theatrical) to stick around, but I would like to buy a print of it elsewhere :)
I realized that I didn't actually post my favorite.
