Calorie Mate meal replacements are a Japanese product that has, it seems, been around for a long time -- see the article The Better-than-Soylent Japanese Meal Replacement by Molly Young. She describes the taste and texture of the bars, but there are also a drink and a squeezable snack pod as well.
The parent company is in Japan but you can order the bars from Amazon. A bit on the pricey side, at about $5/bar.

I've seen these around the groceries in LA's Little Tokyo area and in SF's Japantown. For whatever reason I've never tried them before, will have to pick some up next time.
Ooops, there is also a Wikipedia article on Calorie Mate. It was introduced in 1983, which makes it 30 years older than Soylent! And the article lists many references to it in Manga and Anime.
