Soylent in the Wassail Bowl?

The next two weeks are the time to partaaaaay. Bowls of punch! Eggnog! So, can you turn your 'Lent into a delicious Holiday drink?

Looking around the 'tubes, it seems the typical Eggnog recipe has these ingredients:

  • egg yolks
  • whole milk
  • heavy cream
  • sugar
  • vanilla flavor
  • bourbon whiskey (or dark rum)
  • grated nutmeg

Let us consider how to integrate your preferred FuFo into this. The obvious move is to use a neutral-flavored meal replacement in place of some or all of the milk and cream. Soylent 2.0, Aussielent, or any RTD is ready to go. Or mix up a batch of your neutral-flavored powder (Soylent 1.7, Huel, Light Fuel, Schmilk, KetoChow...) and add a little vanilla; or mix a pitcher of Vanilla-flavor Joylent. Go a bit short on the water, for greater thickness. Let it stand in the fridge overnight to get smooth. The only 'Lents that wouldn't work are the ones with strong flavors like strawberry or chocolate(*).

Pour the liquid FuFo into a big saucepan and whisk in the egg yolks. Heat gently, stirring, until it thickens. Don't let it boil! We're cooking those egg yolks so they will hold the texture and keep it from thinning out too much as we begin to whisk in the the liquor. (If you don't drink, then a dash of rum flavoring for authenticity?).

Pour into cups and grate a flurry of nutmeg over each cup.

Note that if you start with a "Keto" product, this luscious drink is still pretty "keto"! Only the sugar is off the reservation, and if your keto powder mixes up sweet enough on its own, or you can add some no-sugar sweetening, you can drink this without a qualm.

The big question is, how much liquor to add? Looking at several recipes online, it seems that the proportion of liquor to the base is highly varied, from zero to as much as a third of the volume. It all comes down to your own preferences and how quickly or slowly you want your party to get noisy.

If you just want a creamy drink that makes you high, and you don't care about an authentic eggnog flavor, the sky's the limit on mixing your FuFo with alcohol. I've seen a recommendation for 50% Joylent, 25% Kahlua and 25% Vodka as "a perfect drink that will sustain you all day and keep a nice buzz up without killing you." He didn't specify which flavor of Joylent, but you know what? After one glass, you probably won't care...

And the really good news? Many people have commented online that Soylent is the perfect thing to drink when you have a hangover!

  • Actually, a chocolate eggnog is not perhaps to be dismissed too lightly. Hol Food users please report back!
