The TV show Game of Thrones and the book series A Song of Ice and Fire
Season 7 and 8
Do you think the next two seasons are going to have 7 episodes because the tv series has drifted from the books?

I don't know why them drifting from the books would cause them to have shorter seasons. I certainly hope not. I want all the GOT I can get!
I think they're going to have 6-7 episodes because the producers want more time to shoot the scenes leading up to the climax of the series, and they're burnt out after producing the last six seasons.
Rumor has that there is like ~12 episodes planned left. Also JJ is open to a spin off series.
How does plot drift cause fewer episodes per season? Color me confused.
Well DB & DBW aren't story writers at least not with GoT; they're script writers/adaptors so seem to struggle without a source material.
I think GRRM will be helping with that?
Honestly don't think they get or use too much from GRRM; at least for the previous season, it seemed they were given a few markers to hit through the season; outside of which story development seemed a bit dry compared to earlier seasons.
GRRM could also be in flux in how he wants to conclude SoIaF so can probably offer even less direction for DB/DBW
I wonder how the future books will compare to/be influenced by the TV series
