Best practices to develop a Game Dev writer portfolio
Back in the day I heard a lot about modding being the way to build a healthy portfolio for non-coders. Is that still the case, or are there better routes?
If so, what games are recommended?

I think modding is still where it's at.
That being said, making apps is easy enough now that a lot of writers are just making their own games or submitting to the choose your own adventure devs that are jumping into the mobile space.
I've heard Choice of Games and a few other devs will support publishing a story with them via rev.share, but I don't have any first hand experience with that. I think it's free, but they take a % of ad and in-app revenue.
