Brazilians Love the Sega Genesis

Brazilians love all things Sega. As Americans prepare for the launch of the Mini NES, Brazilians are getting a re-release of the "OG" Sega Genesis / Mega Drive. I desperately want one now to place next to my Mini NES. Even today, the Sega Genesis and its 8-bit predecessor, the Master System outsell the PS4 in Brazil.

I need one of these so that Mini NES won't be lonely.

No HDMI output, and not all the game cartridges are guaranteed to run... I loved the Genesis (or Mega Drive as it's known here), but I am not so sure if I want one :(

I wonder if this is like the ones I've seen at my local Target. I've heard negative things on that as well. My hope was that since this was officially licensed it would be high quality, but I guess that's not the case. :-(

Unfortunately. Here are some translated stuff from their FAQ that made me think twice about it:

The system uses a similar circuit, note the original one, so some games are not compatible (like Sonic & Knuckles and Virtua Racing).

You can't save games unless the cartridge have this function (you can run games from a SD Card, but can't save?)

Accessories like Game Genie, Sega CD, Power Base Converter, 32x Meganet, Activator, Mega Mouse and Multitap doesn't work (thanks to the "similar" components used).

Why there's no HDMI? Because "most of TVs on the Brazilian market have composite input, and adding HDMI would make the Genesis more expensive." Lamest excuse ever, and good luck playing the games with a 320x240 resolution. Oh, btw Tectoy recommends using 4:3 format. Plus, this Genesis can't output RGB using a SCART cable.

        So, instead of paying R$ 399 (around US$ 125), I would buy a Pi 3.

Ah, that's unfortunate. It sounds like these are going to be, like SpielerDad said, similar to the throwback consoles you can find at retail stores. If that's the case then they'll likely have the same audio problems that those had too. I remember seeing some audio comparisons for those replica consoles on a retro gaming forum a few years back and the sound quality was... well, it wasn't good.

It's too bad these aren't exactly the same as the original Genesis. When I first saw this story I had my fingers crossed for some new Model 1's (though it would've been really awesome if they remade the CDX).

Yep. They said the sound quality will not be the same as the original, thanks to the similar components used.
