Videogames Are Better Without Mechanics

Videogames Are Better Without Mechanics - Bruno Dias - Medium

This is a transcript of an article that appeared originally in the November-December 1992 issue of PC Prospect magazine, a relatively obscure microcomputing/gaming publication that published only two years of bimonthly issues before it went bankrupt in 1993.

Interesting, I'm not certain I agree completely. But one common issue is that "story" is often developed as a completely separate system that alternates with game system design (the latter is pretty stagnant in AAA games). You solve a system, you get a cut-scene. Adventure/story games have been better at merging story and mechanics. And then, there's Supergiant games where the introduction of each new mechanic says something new about the world you're exploring.

It was dug up in response to this article, "Video Games Are Better Without Stories"

I probably should have given that context up front :p

      Edit for more context:

Another article about this that I found, that was written in response to the Atlantic article. "Stories in Games Aren't Problems, They're Solutions"

I thought this was interesting, considering it was written in 1992. Pretty neat.
