Seeds & soil, fruits and flowers. A community for gardeners!
Ah, early spring. When your garden is all exciting possibilities and no depressing failures (yet)
I love this time of year. For months I've been making plans, buying seeds, and slowing setting the season into motion. Finally at the end of march and beginning of april, progress is visible and this year's veggie garden is on it's way.
This weekend I up-potted my tomato and pepper seedlings that I started indoors at the beginning of the month. I've lost a few of them thanks to forgetting to water a couple of times but most are still going strong. I've also started opening the tops on some of the seedlings I wintersowed—the cold-hardy crops like lettuce, cabbage and beets. They are almost ready to transplant! I probably could already but I'm a little nervous. I direct sowed peas like a week ago but they haven't come up yet. Hope the gophers didn't snatch them...
I am topping off my raised beds with compost and organic mulch, and building and filling a couple of new beds... you can never have too many...
I also spread some seeds for low-growing groundcovers and wildflowers on some bare dirt patches as we attempt to replace the backyard lawn with more interesting plants.
Pretty excited to get into this season. I've learned a few things from last year's mistakes and I'm ready to do better this time :)
Happy Easter everyone! Gardening is basically the same as going to church, right? Anyone else getting started on their gardens?

...I never had winter, so I technically never stopped. I planted seeds which I'm awful at, my grapes are popping back up, my dog is digging up everything sprouting and squirrels are stealing everything they can. But I've been building stone walkways and... shopping. So much shopping.
Does your growing season slow down in summer because it's too hot or are you just in a prefect year round climate?
I am hoping to get walkways and other hardscaping done this year, my yard needs to be fancier!
For SOME things the summer is fine. For a lot it's DEATH IS UPON ME THE SUN HAS FORSAKEN ME END IS NIGH. Everything wants to be watered constantly and, well, it's not very possible. (We're almost always in drought so water is limited.) I... do a lot of cactus. I'm very into my cactus/succulent collection. But a lot of things die horrifically in the summer. Mostly my grapes and a few peppers feel like living more than a year.
