'One time, I actually threw up': Why video game voice actors are on strike

You might not recognize Jennifer Hale in a crowd, but if you've played a video game or watched a cartoon in the last 20 years, you've probably heard her work. The actor from Goose Bay, N.L., has voiced dozens of characters in popular franchises such as Star Wars, Spider-Man and the Halo video games.

    The arguments from the lawyer representing the game companies are... fascinating. He's saying it wouldn't be fair to pay actors residuals because they don't pay developers residuals, and actors are "less than one-tenth of one per cent of the total workforce on the game."

    That sounds like a case for giving more people residuals, not an argument that actors don't deserve royalties.

    "Advocates for the publishers' side have argued that players care more about the visual effect of Commander Shepard darting across a battlefield than what she sounds like in dialogue scenes."

    If that's the case, why did they hire those actors in the first place? They could've gotten college students to work for $100 total for the whole game, just for the right to be included in the credits. Of course, with that approach, they'd get mediocre acting, poor verbal special effects, and often a lack of consistency as the first person they hired vanishes before the next recording session and they have to find someone else.

    They want quality acting (not just voice; they also record body movements for the fight scenes) - but they don't want to pay what all the other acting industries pay.

    I suspect the big thing isn't how much the actors want, it's calculating royalties at all - because once they're doing it for one group, the developers are going to step up and say, "hey, if you sell 3 million copies, maybe you should throw back a bit more for those of us who pulled 16-hour-days to meet those deadlines."

    I love that they are also advocating for bonuses for people who work16 hour crunch days to make blockbusters. I wish them well and hope they win.

    They show the most well known actor in the thumbnail and the quote is actually attributed to another. Way to create the visualization.
