Fic chat - Marriage of convenience/ arranged marriage/ hockey marriage
I thought it might be fun to have some general discussion about fic. I thought it'd be interesting to start with a trope with some well known hockey fics.
So do you like marriage of convenience etc fic? Anything you don't like about it? Is there anything you have wanted to read or write?
Do you have any favourites you would like to share?

Oh my gosh I love this trope. I love it especially when they love each other right away. And I only like the angst when there's a happy ending. Which most of my favorite s/g fics are usually good at delivering the happy ending. I'll go dig through my faves and come back to this if no one minds I'm like super late at commenting on anything.
Also if anyone is still reading though this
I am still reading and I'm sure other people would like to see your favs too.
Happy endings are all the sweeter after some angst on the way to them.
I can read arranged marriage fic all the live-long day, especially if it's for some reason that the married parties nominally agree with but have no actual control over, like S/G where they have to get married to keep Russia from extraditing Geno. (I'm aware this makes ABSOLUTELY NO SENSE from an international law perspective, and I do not care.) If things are a little more dystopian, I like that, too - I love that "us against the world" thing. And I loved what I guess I'd call forced intimacy, which arranged marriage usually has in spades.
As you can prob guess from my example, I love thehoyden's King and Lionheart. But for something angstier and more emotionally complicated, I also really like cephelopody's To Love and Honor series, where Filip Forsberg and Calle Jarnkrok get hockey married, but Filip doesn't realize that Calle wasn't given a choice about it.
I recently re-read the To love and honor series, which was why I thought about this in the first place (and included the hockey marriage option). I do love that for a different look at things. The experiences of the elite players and the guys who are fighting for spots can be pretty different. I also enjoyed the aftermath being dealt with.
i think King and Lionheart is one of the first hockey fics I read and the slow build in it really works, because of the forced intimacy and living together.
As long as there is internal consistency I can go for some unlikely setups.
Oh, me too. If it delivers on the iddy things I want and makes some kind of internal sense, I can read and love the most ridiculous things. :D
Sometimes I just want the iddy goodness. And then other times I get completely thrown out by the silliest things.
Help I'm reading King and Lionheart and dying help.
Gonch is possibly my favorite. He spends the whole beginning like "can someone teach Zhenya English already so I don't have to translate these awkward puppies in love?"
Gonch being (affectionately) annoyed at being caught between the awkward puppies in love is one of my favorite hockey tropes! (In part because it only happens when there are awkward S/G puppies in love! And in part because it's always hysterically funny!)
Re-reading (or listening to the podfic rather) because of this thread and I also, also, dead and dying. SUCH a great fic and trope. I agree, Exasperated Go-Between Gonch is the best.
