Horror and Dark Fantasy in print, film, and television.
Why didn't I know Dan Simmons writes horror?
I've read the first 300 pages of Summer of Night in the past 24 hours and it's one of the best things I've read in ages.

Been meaning to get some of his stuff for the collection.
I haven't read "Summer of Night" but I'm going to look for it since it sounds riveting. I have read three of his other novels, which I found were excellent: "The Terror," "Carrion Comfort" and "Drood." If you enjoy the slow, methodical build of tension and horror, then I think you'll like these.
I'd read the Hyperion novels and loved them but didn't notice he wrote outside of science fiction.
I haven't heard of the Hyperion series before, but I am intrigued that Simmons used the story framing device similar to Boccaccio's "Decameron." Do you recommend "Hyperion"?
If you're SciFi geek at all, they are modern classics of the genre.
I think I may just qualify for SciFi newbie on way to geek status. I'm going to be at a used bookstore tomorrow, so I'll look for Simmons in the sci-fi section!
Best of luck. I always have a hard time find his stuff in used book shops because it's one of those things many people don't part with. Maybe ask the shop if they have a list and they can call you if something comes in.
I deeply recommend "the Terror" by Simmons, a great mixture of horror, fantasy and true historical events.
