star wars babyfic/force ghost han wip - part 1 of ???
I do what I want and what I want is to post a WIP!!! don't @ me!!!!!!
He was having a nap like he'd never had before. It was quiet and peaceful, with no Wookiee howling and no Princess asking him how he was going to get out of a jam this time. It was nice, the best nap he'd ever had.
All right, so it was a little lonely. But not so much that when a soft greenish light surrounded him, he wasn't annoyed.
"What in the world?" He looked around. His stab wound was gone - had been gone for awhile, he thought. He'd come to terms with it, anyway. But what he wasn't to terms with was the fact that he was looking down at unlined hands, and looking across space at old man Kenobi and some weird-looking kid he'd never seen before.
"Excuse me," he said.
His voice echoed strangely. He cleared his throat and tried again. "Kenobi. I thought you were dead."
"Oh, rest assured I am," Kenobi said. "So are you, it seems."
"I knew that." He grunted. "Why am I here, then?" And where was here? They seemed to be floating in some kind of mist.
"The Force has caught you," Kenobi said. "It happens sometimes."
"Bullshit," Han said.
It didn't have the withering effect on Kenobi that it might've had on Chewie, or - okay, it never had that effect on Chewie, either. He felt a pang in his chest at the thought.
"That will fade with time," Kenobi said.
Invasive son of a gun. Han turned away.
Of course, the mist didn't adhere to normal rules of logic. Kenobi's image floated with him.
"You can ignore him for awhile, if you need to," the kid said.
"What exactly makes you think I need a twelve-year-old's advice?"
The kid smirked; there was no other word for it. He had a slappable face that reminded Han of someone, though he couldn't place it exactly. "I'm not twelve."
"You're dead, so it doesn't matter either way, does it?"
"The Force sustains life here, kind of," the kid said.
"What an endorsement." Han reached out at the mist, waving his hand through it.
For a moment, an image coalesced: Rey, looking reassuringly alive, holding a baby.
"What in the world -!"
"Patience," Kenobi intoned, as he and the kid melted away.
-
"I'm going to kill him," Rey breathed, looking down at the wiggling bundle of baby human in her arms.
Finn, whose respect for Rey sometimes included a healthy dose of please-don't-stab-this-man, said, "The baby? Rey!"
"Not the baby." Rey glared down at the baby in question, even as she rocked him back and forth in her arms. "Dameron."
Poe was responsible for this baby, who was his cousin's son. But the cousin was off on some daring mission to a planetary system far from the Resistance's current base, and Poe himself had just been called out to deal with supply runs, at General Organa's special request.
So he'd dropped the baby with Rey and Finn, and Finn had promised to take care of him, because Poe had looked really stressed and Finn liked to be helpful. And now the baby was dribbling on Rey's wrist.
Finn watched as Rey sighed.
"At least he's cute?" he said.
"You can hold him," Rey said, thrusting the baby into Finn's arms.
Finn, who had never held a baby before, felt a moment of bottomless panic as the baby's head lolled over his arm. But then the baby sighed and snuggled into him, and Finn felt himself moving his arms instinctively, cradling the baby's tiny legs as it popped chubby fingers into its mouth.
"His teeth will go wonky if he does that later," Rey said, nodding to the fingers in question.
"That's for later," Finn said. Right now, he was enjoying Rey's smiles by proxy, and the baby was warm and apparently perfectly comfortable with him.
They ended up watching a holo-drama together on the couch. The baby fussed every few minutes, but Finn was used to that kind of thing; he knew to rock the baby, to ask Rey to grab a warm bottle halfway through the night. Rey did her best to help, but she kept eyeing the baby like he might be a First Order spy or a plasma mine in cute baby disguise.
After an hour or so of unbroken sleep from the baby, Finn said, "We can probably go to bed now."
Rey nodded and stood to leave. Finn stood too - and the baby said, "Bah?"
Oh no. "Shhhh."
"Baaaahhhhh!"
"You go," Finn said. "I can stay out here with him. He'll settle down eventually." And Rey's room, Finn knew, might as well be a world away. He pushed the now-familiar pang down.
"Oh," Rey said. "I - it's fine, really." She sat back down, still eyeing the baby suspiciously.
"Rey. You need to sleep."
"I can sleep anywhere." As though to prove it, Rey moved against Finn, snuggling into his arm. It felt like being cuddled by a sergeant in full armor.
"Bah?" the baby said.
"Hush now," Rey said, her voice more gentle than Finn had ever heard it. "You're lucky, you know, getting to stay here." Her hand appeared in Finn's range of vision, and she patted the baby's head twice.
He must have missed his mother - or maybe he was just as much of a soft touch as Finn. Either way, that somehow settled the baby down. Within minutes, both he and Rey were asleep.
-
"Put your arm around her!" Han shook his head. "He's worse than Chewie."
"I would counsel you to -"
"Counsel, schmouncel. He had every opportunity!"
"The child is their first priority," the kid said. Han still had no idea who he was, but he had the ability to sound insufferably high-and-mighty. 'Inner peace gained by careful contemplation,' Han's ass. "As it should be."
"I never sat back like that when I could've made a move."
Kenobi raised his eyebrows. An image of Han himself, young and staring at Leia, shimmered in the mist.
"You stop that!"
"Hmm," Kenobi said. He and the kid drifted away - not disappearing, but giving Han space.
Something around him rippled - a press of power. The Force, probably. What a crock. Han glared at it, too, hoping to make it go away.
It didn't work, of course, so he focused on the mist again.
