I can neither argue with, nor improve upon, this suggestion.

    • GuyDudemanSep 07, 2016 at 11:18 AM

Yeah! I'll just delete the community altogether! Great idea!!

I know! I was playing along!

In general, or in this one comm? In general, that should be up to the comm. In this specific comm, I'd rather not see polls about how people will vote in November or that sort of thing.

I am extremely political. But I think that should be put aside in a lot of fandom places because it lets us come together and maybe bond across certain divides. Also, for some people fandom is a break from all that noise ;)

I think you shouldn't allow polls in the /polls community.

  • AnonTrousersAbrielSep 07, 2016 at 7:36 AM

Disallow them pls /a European who gives exactly 0 fucks about American politics

    • GuyDudemanSep 07, 2016 at 11:22 AM

You can post polls about your country's politics too, you know.

  • tielanSep 07, 2016 at 12:32 AM

I guess it depends on just how much you're going to censor. Either the imzy community will have to trust that people will be civil and willing to engage with those of different political viewpoints, or else the best option for respectful civility is to make no opportunity for impolite disagreement.

  • anniespinkhouseSep 07, 2016 at 6:56 AM

I may not be keen on them but that would be some fairly heavy censorship for a space which aims to be welcoming for all. Definitely wouldn't welcome that.

We encourage people to have communities that function the way they want them to. So if that means someone doesn't want political discussion, they don't have to have it. He's not talking about a sitewide disabling of polls.

      • GuyDudemanSep 07, 2016 at 11:32 AM

Right. I just saw a lot of activity (and not all activity is necessarily good) surrounding these polls, and a lot of people were saying I should ban political polls (particularly when the polls started being negative towards Hillary Clinton, which indicates a sort of bias inherent in the community, in my view).

I just don't want /polls to favor one side or another. Either they all go or they all stay or some aspect of them stays we create more guidelines and rules, and more work for me as community leader.

I like my idea of one rule, leaving everything subjective. But it does have risks.

      • anniespinkhouseSep 07, 2016 at 11:54 AM

The key to me is to ensure that people who don't want to see certain content don't see it. We are all responsible for what we choose to see on the internet. Censorship of one thing inevitably leads to another and on and on. Politics isn't the only topic people will get heated about. If it is on a comm they are in , then they can either message the leader about the effect it has and see if it can be altered or leave the community. For site wide polls then maybe there could be an on or off choice - or if the read- more cut was more discerning a 'politics' tag/warning would mean anyone could skim on by.

      • JessicaSep 07, 2016 at 12:18 PM

Polls only happen within communities. I meant that it wouldn't be a rule imposed site wide and its up to the leader of polls to decide what kind of polls they want.

I do like the idea of mandatory tagging of posts, and allowing people the ability to filter posts within different communities by the tags... like a settings page within the community, just for that user, that allows them to check on/off the tags that the want to see posts of... If they don't want US Politics posts, then they can un-check that tag, etc.

A political FB group I'm on openly has Politics Free Tuesdays--meaning, nothing can be posted that has anything to do with politics those days. Anything that does gets deleted. And that's a group that is ABOUT politics!! So I'm all for maybe adopting that model--pick a day or two to either post political stuff those days or a day or two of politics-free postings.

  • stile99Sep 07, 2016 at 1:35 AM

Would have to change the description then. Can't tell people they can start a poll on anything if you mean "only this, but not that".

    • GuyDudemanSep 07, 2016 at 1:12 PM

Exactly. It would change the whole premise of the community.

  • DukeSep 07, 2016 at 4:01 AM

    Not me.
