Yeah, it's funny because we get about equal complaints of not having enough stuff on the screen and wasting all this empty space, and having way too much clutter and wishing it wasn't as busy. You can't win no matter what! We're constantly trying to figure out the best way to make things work for everyone, and right now the design we have translates to having the best/most universal experience whether you're on desktop, tablet, or phone.
At some point in the future, I'd love to create a super-wide mode of the site so that when you're on a really large screen, it would be three panels instead of two: communities list, feed, and then individual posts would open up in the third panel so you can be viewing and commenting posts while still having your feed open and scrolling through until you open up the next post.
But... right now we're still very, very, very early in what we're trying to do and become, and that means that we're focused a lot more on adding features that create additional functionality and ways of interacting rather than aesthetic changes. So that'll probably be a very long ways off, sorry. :/
If you are using a desktop computer, remember that you can zoom in by pressing the ctrl (Windows) or command (Mac) and + keys on your keyboard. This will make everything appear bigger, thus fill more space on the page.

That's cool. It was just on my mind. Loving the site so far! :)
That 3 panel mode sounds so cool. Love what you all are doing.
I like the 3 column idea!

yes
I agree, it feels almost like a mobile site to me, which feels awkward on a desktop.
