That fancy check mark..

Please tell me about that fancy little check mark on the posting page that turns green when I click it. What does it signify? Do I look cool if I use it? Will it make me sneeze? Can I have one for my signature line at work?
But seriously, what's it for?

Thanks very much to @Magess for answering this.
To expand a bit, theres a weird, sometimes great, sometimes frustrating phenomenon that happens when you lead an internet space.
For instance, I say "cats are awesome".
This is taken as an Official Position of Imzy as a Company (OPoIaaC™). Not only is this taken as OPoIaaC, it's also seen as a blanket condemnation of dogs. Because I once, in a rather obscure and personal space said that cats are awesome, it is now believed that the entire company thinks that dogs are the absolute worst. Protests are formed, those nice animal people are called, the ones who spill red paint on people's fur coats, it becomes a whole giant shenanigan. I resign in disgrace because I've (and by "I", I mean the company) called for the murder of all dogs (sorry buster!).
The distinguish button, while not totally in all cases avoiding this terrible path of destruction, does to some degree help mitigate stuff! Yay, pretty buttons that do things! It works as a social signal to say "I am acting in an official capacity" versus "I am slightly inebriated and shouting off somewhat randomly!"
Not to say that I would ever say anything on Imzy while slightly inebriated and/or shooting from the hip.
How dare you hate dogs. :P
Exactly!
We're the best tag-team duo in the nation. Can't wait for the cage match at Wrestlemania.
I will totally kick your butt! Just sayin!
Quickedit: I think I fundamentally don't understand how wrestlemania works. Though I suspect that in this scenario, we're on the same team and I'm not allowed to kick your butt? That is unfortunate.
Same team! Same team!
Damnit you responded while I was editing!
You're all quite mad. (I think I love you.)
I'm just dancin'
I spend much of my time guessing, exaggerating and flat out making shit up. The rest of the time I'm at least half-inebriated. Now I'm terrified that everyone who is fool enough to join a community I lead will end up killing puppies in strange cult-like rituals aimed at turning cats into cartoon dinosaurs! I cannot take the pressure!!!!
Ok. So the check mark says, "I've put on my big girl hat and am now going to say wise and important things." Yeah, I suppose we all have to do that sometimes. Thanks for the charming and witty explanation.
Yep basically this! I really appreciate that button because it lets me believe that if I don't hit it, I'm a regular member of a community and interacting like anyone else would. If I hit the button, I'm usually establishing policy, enforcing policy, or otherwise doing Very Official Things™. As a sidenote, I'm enjoying TMing stuff tonight in entirely nonsensical ways, my apologies.
I have that little superscript ™ saved for just that reason. No apologies required. You have judged your audience quite well.
It marks you as posting as a Leader.
Thank you. I love being special.
As @Magess said, toggling the checkmark before posting or commenting flairs your message as that of a community leader, speaking in that capacity, like I've done here.
It's a very pretty badge. Does it come in metalics, copper maybe? (Thank you.)
It comes in green ;)
You mean "patinated copper"? I'll take it!
