Why wouldn't you make the Real Name profile exist, if not as a default, for everyone? Or at least appear in the list if they've filled in the real name field on the account page?
Yes. But I guess what I'm saying is that I think it should be an exception. As it's a special kind of profile with special rights and restrictions, potentially.
But I had my "real name" saved on my profile at the time, along with my work address that was correctly used. But it was still simply addressed to "Zork" on the mailing label.
But that doesn't make any sense. If you were limited to using it in the community that triggered its creation, fine. But why should a first post in a new place be a new profile trigger? And the -only- trigger?
I get that you don't want users making tons of profiles they never use and hogging names. But the way this is structured means you've decided that the number of coms you are a member of == the number of profiles you can have. So... Why not just set that limit explicitly and do all creation and management from the Account page? You'd have the same limit you do now. Without a localized trigger for a universal setting.
And if they leave a com and lower their limit below the number of profiles they have then they have to delete one.
A username must be linked to a community. You can not create usernames that just float out there, without that association. Until you are ready to use a username in a community, we do not want you setting it, then, three months later deciding when you do go to interact in a named way that it's no longer the username you want to use.
It has to do with this announcement, and is a wee bit of a bug. We'll have it fixed soon.
Annnnd it should be gone.

To use @Zork as an example, they put "Zork" as their first name. Then, we tried to send them a shirt, and they almost didn't get it.
As many people will put in potentially untrue data for names until they absolutely need to, we did not auto create the real name identity for anyone.
But I also cannot make one for future use until I come across some place that requires it or try to talk somewhere I haven't talked before.
That is true of any username in our system, this is no exception.

So... I can only make a new profile the first time I post in a new community. But then that profile can be used in any community?
Correct, any community you have not established a username in.

So they ARE limited to being used in the one that you created it with?
FWIW, not only do I not see that one, I can't add any new profiles at all, atm.
You can not add new profiles from that screen. New profiles can only be added when you post or comment in a community for the first time.
Otherwise, people will create a tonne of profiles that they do not use.
... You have to decide on the fly whether a particular community is one in which you need a new profile?
Don't know that I have that much foresight.
Well, the server decides whether you can create a new profile or not.
We do not force people to chose a username in a community until they do to do something that requires a username, like, commenting.
If all you did was comment anonymously in a community, then we'd never force you to chose a username.
