A Newbie's Guide to Publishing: What Works: Promo for Ebooks
I get bombarded by email, mostly from people either thanking me or asking me for something, and I simply can't respond to everyone. If you've emailed me and not gotten a reply, it's because I need an assistant, not because I hate you.

This post is older, but much of the info in it is still relevant. The principle of only doing things that work for you is becoming my rule of thumb. (I don't know what works for me yet, because I'm new to this, but you can bet I'll be keeping track of my promo results!)

As someone who has worked in marketing—seriously, only do what works for you. I second this 100%.
With every company and brand, this is completely different, even when they're in the same industry. The tone, the social platforms you use, the blogs you write, everything. Different growth or retention tactics will turn out amazing with one audience and completely bomb with another.
And so naturally, the same thing applies to you and your books. Do what makes the most sense for you, and you'll succeed (or, at least, be more likely to). If you try to do other things just because you think you "should" in order to be successful, you'll end up stressing yourself out because it'll be so much harder to do, you'll end up spending 80% of your time on stuff that gives you 20% of the return instead of the other way around, and worst, you'll come off seeming really inauthentic and won't resonate with your audience, who like you and the stuff you write, which then might even turn some people off you. Don't do it.
This is everything. I'm realizing it's so much better to only do the marketing that either feels easy or that I KNOW is guaranteed to provide major returns. Anything else is shooting myself in the foot.
This is amazing advice. I needed the reminder that sales fluctuate. I'm about to hit Publish on my first books and I know it's going to be an emotional roller coaster.
What a great article! I've read a couple other posts from Konrath and they tend to be full of good information.
