It's hard to pinpoint the exact time in history when genre labels were used to classify music, but the fact is that over the past century, and certainly still today, genre labels dominate. Whether organising your iTunes library, receiving music recommendations from apps like Spotify, or buying CDs at a record store, genre is the first way in which we navigate the music we like.

I disagree that genre classifications are obsolete. It doesn't describe everything about a song, but it describes some important stylistic elements. Classifying songs by their psychological effect doesn't capture that. One musician might write songs with very different levels of arousal/valence/depth. Would you still categorize them differently?
This is an interesting way to think about music. But I wouldn't use it as the only way of classifying music.
Very interesting article. I always disliked assigning Genres to Songs, because they often limit the openness of the others person, but I also find it hard sometimes to describe songs or artists without describing them through genres, even when that is very inacurate
