For the first time in American history - OK, maybe the second time - a presidential candidate's race played a central role in his campaign, and is one of the key factors that got him elected. Donald Trump will not be our first white president. (Or our first male president either.)

This article has a very interesting view of the election, one I hadn't considered. When we talk about identity politics, we usually are talking about the left, and the politics of resisting systematic oppression. However, we have to remember that ALL politics, in some way, are identity politics. Trump was one of the first to realize that in America, and his normalization and use of the identity politics of the right paint a worrying picture, harkening back to nationalist leaders of the early 20th century.
