Discussion, fic, art, squee, and all sorts of other content about the pairing of Jim Kirk and Leonard "Bones" McCoy.
Welcome! Introduce yourself, if you so choose.
Welcome to Kirk/McCoy on imzy! We're still pretty new, but I have faith in the boys and their fans that we can be awesome regardless. If you'd like to introduce yourself, go ahead and leave a message here!

Hi, people who will come after me! I am fin, your mod. I have modded LJ communities and mailing lists and even a couple tumblrs-I-tried-to-make-like-communities, but we are all new to imzy so I shall be learning with you.
I've been a Star Trek fan since I was a kid (I cut my teeth on TNG but have seen all of TOS and at least tried out each of the other series), but I only came to Kirk/McCoy with the new movies. Nevertheless, I love them dearly.
Feel free to ping me any time with questions or just to chat!
waves No clue about Imzy, but I'd been invited and your post on Tumblr motivated me to actually join. At least this looks a lot more like LJ so we can have actual interactions.
Glad you took the bull by the horns and created this community!
Yay, I'm glad you took the plunge and joined! We are all new to imzy, but I'm really enjoying it so far. The communities give a much better sense of "place" than tags on tumblr ever did for me, and God, I missed threaded commenting with the fire of thousand suns. Imzy's threads don't go very deep, but at least they exist.
Welcome!
Hiiiii I'm Morgan! waves shyly
I'm a lifelong Trek fan, grew up with TOS and TNG, and McCoy has always been my favorite character. I never really shipped any of the characters until AOS, but now I am a die-hard Kirk/McCoy girl. (I do occasionally read a Spock pairing here and there, but not often.) I haven't written much, mostly because new fandoms are HARD, and most of the fandom friends I regularly communicate with aren't very into Star Trek, so it's hard to find regular motivation to try. /o\ But I hope to change that eventually, and Beyond definitely gave me some inspiration!
So very glad to see a Kirk/McCoy community here. I'm still a little wary of Imzy (NEW THINGS ARE SCARY), but this was the first community I've come across to actually tempt me into joining and commenting. :D
Welcome! I recognize your name from Clint/Coulson fandom. I always love running into people I've known from elsewhere. :D
I totally feel you about new fandoms being hard! Writing that first fic--and then posting it--can be terrifying. But having a comm to lean on can really help, in my experience! You're always welcome to give me a shout if you need cheerleading or beta reading or any of that jazz, and I'm sure there are others who'd be happy to help, too. We all want more Kirk/McCoy out in the world. :D
I suspect I jumped into imzy so quickly because I got really dissatisfied with how communication on tumblr works, and I missed fandom so much that when someone mentioned fandom was sticking a toe into imzy to see how it worked, I kind of leaped on it like a crazy person. lol. I'm hoping it takes off, but it's early days yet, while we all figure it out!
Yay! I've been hoping somebody would start a McKirk community!
I ship Kirk/Spock in TOS, so I was a little surprised to find myself shipping Kirk/McCoy and Spock/Uhura in the reboot verse, but that's how it shook out. I lost interest a little bit due to Into Darkness, but Beyond has revived it, and I'm currently playing catch up on all the great fic I missed.
I debated making the comm for about a week because I felt weirdly like I hadn't been involved enough in McKirk to be "qualified", but no one else had done it and you know what they say, be the interaction you want to see.
I also shipped Kirk/Spock in TOS, and had the same experience with the reboot! :D I wonder how many of us have the same story.
I confess, I actually never saw Into Darkness. Friends told me about it and I didn't think I'd enjoy it. But I loved Beyond, loved loved loved it. It felt like Trek again. <3
I didn't see it either, for the same reason, but no new canon for seven years meant I drifted away from the fandom a bit. Really glad to be back, though! Maybe I've just been lucky, but Star Trek fic seems like it's almost always above average in quality, maybe because it's such a longstanding and experienced fandom.
Yeah, being without canon that long is really tough, especially when there are other new shiny things out there to enjoy. I'm glad to be back regardless!
My theory (unsubstantiated by anything) is that fandoms with the kind of history that Trek has have kind of a self-filtering effect--you have to be just a little bit more confident to get into them because they have that history. Even when the version you're getting into is a reboot. Which has both its up and down sides. :)
That makes sense. I know I've been too intimidated to write anything in Star Trek yet, and it is because I'm a very casual fan compared to some and feel pretty much guaranteed to mess something up!
I totally encourage you to write something! I would be happy to cheerlead / beta read / answer questions / whatever, if desired.
And for motivational purposes, here is what I remind myself of whenever I am insecure about writing or posting fic: http://cophinaphile.tumblr.com/post/108470558004/holy-shit-two-cakes
Hello, hello! Long time (if you consider the 2009 Reboot a long time ago) Jones shipper. I harken back to ye olde Ship Wars with that terminology. I still like it better than McKirk, but I know McKirk has got everyone's heart and soul, now. What can I say. Go, McKirk! Stuff McCock. :)
I confess, I was confused as heck when I started running across the term "Jones" because it sounds like a person's name, so I was all, "Who are they talking about?" lol. My own preference is not to smush ship names at all, but I have bowed to current fandom practice and use McKirk when appropriate.
Anyway, welcome to the comm!
I'm stumbling my way through this site to say hi! Super stoked to be here and looking forward to participating and all that (I've basically packed my bags from Tumblr. I'm so done w Tumblr).
First introduced to Bones and Kirk, and Bones/Kirk through the 2009 movie. :D My interest in the series waned w RL and the Into Darkness debacle, but kicked into overdrive with the Beyond movie.
So! Currently watching my way through the TOS and have picked up some ST novels. Bones remains my favourite across all mediums xD.
I am 100% up to chatting or cmnting, or however way this site wants us to communicate (I'm still... figuring this all out). :'''D
Thanks for organising this comm!
Welcome! We're glad to have you, and OMG I am so on the same page re: Tumblr. I was really happy to see imzy getting some traction, and am doing my best to help it stick as a fandom gathering place!
Ooh, are you doing a full TOS rewatch? I started one, but then got distracted by fic and comm running. //grins// I may be able to acquire the reboot-verse comics soon, and I'm looking forward to that.
I encourage all commenting and chatting and posting of all manner of things. Especially posting. I know that people are finding their feet on a new platform and I'm committed to keeping the comm active while they do, but I'm still eagerly looking forward to other people posting stuff. The Challenge should kickstart that. //fingers crossed//
I'm seeing murmurs of Imzy across a couple of my fandoms so I have all available fingers cross for another mass migration.
re: TOS. I'm doing a full rewatch, yes! Well, sort of. I picked up where I stopped a couple of years ago, which was only halfway through S1 anyway, and now I'm up to... I think, ep 24? Or something? Of S2.
It's super interesting to see all the characters 'settled' in their respective roles in comparison to AOS where they're new :D. (Or "fascinating", for 5 more nerd points).
Where did you stop with your rewatch? Super appreciate you pausing it to sort this comm out (: And oh! Comics! Might have to look into that myself.
So keen for that challenge!
I only got through four episodes before my rewatch got derailed. //laughs at self// Even just four eps in, though, I was surprised how many famous eps I ran into. I don't know if it's that all the eps are so well known now, or if they really are front loaded a bit. I'll get back to it at some point.
Even in that few eps, though, it was interesting to be reminded of the characters as they are in the original canon. Not just because of how they differ from the reboot, but because of how they differ from general cultural memory of them.
The Challenge is up now! I need to make a banner for it, because the announcement is just text and I'm worried it's not eye catching enough.
Hiya - Reboot girl here, very new to ST fandom. Currently working my way through TOS but fell in love with McKirk at the same time they fell in love with each other: on the shuttle ride in the new timeline. ;-)
Adore the pairing because it's so caring, but snarky and grounded too - and h/c is my jam. Have been reading fic like mad! Imzy seems like a really nice platform to chat and prompt. I'm apparentlyimdrunk on tumblr.
Hello! Super stoked to see you here :D. I'm working my way through TOS as well! Where are you up to? I'm just about to finish of S2. And lmfao @ the shuttle ride. xD. Yes. Exactly. (Or maybe Leonard fell in love a little bit later, when he was less drunk x,,D)
Those are definitely v good reasons to adore the pairing 8D. And yay for fic binges! Being on Imzy so far has been a blast! I'm generally around if you ever want to chat\o/.
(er. I had a poke around your tumblr, I hope you don't mind, and Justified! Merlin! !!!)
Justified is awesome! Love Raylan Givens! And oh, Merlin. One of my fave slash fandoms!
I'm up to the Tarsus episode, so I've got a long way to go! But very much enjoying the ride. I'm always up for chatter, yes please!
You got any fave fics? I love a McKirk AU too, but also any and all Academy fic. Really anything!
Good to meet you! :-D
I'm more of a Tim Gutterson person myself. LOVE that guy. I... really need to finish watching the series though. I keep getting distracted like something awful. A perfect example of how bad I get distracted -- I did start Merlin in '08/09, and finally! finished! it! Earlier this year omg. Are you still active in that fandom or?
Oh! The Tarsus ep was early in the series, wasn't it? I'll have to go rewatch some of those earlier S1 eps, it's been a while x,D. FEEL FREE TO TELL ME ALL YOUR THOUGHTS ABT IT THOUGH. I seriously love talking shop. :D ep discussions, fic ideas. Literally anything about TOS McCoy and how De was a total babe... x,D
Oh god. Okay. I'm more of an AU reader (really though, I read anything), but let me see what I've got on hand:
Bones breaks a leg 'verse is one of my go-to faves. All of Cani's work I'd rec, though I've assumed you've already run into their stuff.
Standby is a Academy era fic for most part. H/C, but take note of the warnings!!
Mailman AU Fairly self explanatory. Definitely a fun fic with pining and miscommunication etc etc.
I'll come back w more if you want them. xD.
Love Gutterson! Yeah I'm the same though, I think the show peaked in series 4 and I kind of like just thinking it continued happily(ish) forever, I've not been motivated to catch up on the last seasons as much.
Not been active in Merlin for a while, but when it was first on TV I was super into it, posted fic on LJ under julesoh. It's such a true love story though, I love the whole series, will have to do a full rewatch soon. Arthur was my crush in that.
Thank you for the recs, I have some long train journeys in the next couple of days so will hit those up then! Yeah I'm still in the first series of top, I'm savouring it! Love Bones and DeForest's blue blue eyes. I also find Spock way hotter than I do in AOS! The Tarsus ep was brutal. What I really like is th at th eyre telling stories properly. Obviously there's a bit if cheesiness but the eps feel like mini plays, because of the limited budget, no CGI, etc. So they're mote subtle and thoughtful. Loving them!
re: Justified. Yeah I did hear that S5 didn't quite measure up to S4. I don't know really know the details, I'm still at the start of S2 :''D. Every so often I gear my self up for a rewatch, mainline all S1, and then stop because it's all rather 'heavy', if that makes sense? xD.
I don't think I've read any of your stuff/o. But yeah, my god did that show make me angry sometimes, and it took me daaaaays to get over the last couple of eps. But I love it. Lancelot is my fave :D. LET ME KNOW WHEN YOU DO A REWATCH OK!
Smart thing in packing some good reading for the train ride!! Ugh, Bones's eyes in TOS is kinda like what Jim's are in AOS #__#. And yeah, the story telling is really different, and, haha, it took me a moment to realise that TOS and AOS Jims were... they were similar, but TOS didn't have that sort of gung-ho of current action films, I guess. It's really interesting to compare/contrast. I love seeing all the characters in TOS really settled in.
And yeah, sometimes the writing or whatever is cheesy, but, god, do those guys sell it. There's none of that awareness? I guess? in the writing or in their acting, it's all 'we are members of Starfleet and we're doing our thing'. It's great :D.
Welcome! Ahh, that shuttle ride, the beginning of so many things. //hearts//
You know, I never tried to put into words what it is I like about Kirk/McCoy, but you hit the nail on the head--caring, snarky, and grounded. //grins//
I hope you enjoy it here!
Think I will! I don't know, something just immediately clicked for me with that first scene! Chemistry. Two fuck-ups finding each other. I really like the idea that they don't quite fit the typical Starfleet model, but they're awesome anyway!
Hi there! I'm offensiveagentpie! I watched some Trek (mostly TOS) as a kid, but didn't become a fan until a few years ago. I was really excited to see a Kirk/McCoy community on here! It's one of my favorite pairings. I only ship it in the reboot-verse though...when it comes to TOS I'm a Kirk/Spock gal.
I'm still figuring out imzy and I'm not as active here as I am on tumblr. You can find me there at: offensiveagentpie.tumblr.com
But anyway, I'm glad to see the community here! I've written several fics for the pairing if anyone wants to read and if it's alright to do a shameless self promotion.
http://archiveofourown.org/users/offensiveagentpie/pseuds/offensiveagentpie/works?fandom_id=601802
Hey there! Welcome to the comm! Lots of us have different pairings in TOS versus Reboot. I have all sorts of meta thoughts about why which may come out in a post some day, we'll see. //grins//
imzy is definitely still getting going, but if I recall correctly, private beta is ending at the end of the month. Exciting!
I think we can all appreciate a bit of shameless self-promotion. :D
Greetings! Just saw a post about this new site on LJ Jim_and_Bones and decided to pop on over to check it out. It's nice to see new movement in the fandom.
Welcome! I wondered if some of our newest members were coming more from there than they were from imzy coming out of beta. //grins// We're glad to have you!
You know, I think small fandoms, and fandoms that are small because the canon that originally inspired them (like the 2009 movie) is a few years in the past suffer more from the lack of a sense of "place" on tumblr. Kirk/McCoy has survived better than many, which I suspect is due in part to jim_and_bones hanging in there through the LJ problems.
I really got hooked on the pairing not too long before I found out about imzy (during the beta), and since I was not at all enjoying tumblr, I decided to see how many Kirk/McCoy people I could drag over to imzy with me. lol. It's been a lot of fun! I'm hopeful that seeing regular activity will both engage new folks and re-engage folks who drifted away over time. :)
I just can't get the feel for Tumblr either. It's great for posting vids and pics, but not conducive to discussion, and I agree, it doesn't seem to foster the sense of community that LJ did.
I'm somewhat surprised at the subdued response to Star Trek Beyond. I expected a bigger bump in fandom activity. Personally I loved the movie.
I also loved the movie. I was a bit surprised at the subdued response, but not hugely so. People like the new shiny, and reboot Trek and its pairings are 7 years old now, even if there was some new material in the move. Alas.
It's too bad because Beyond gave use some nice fill-in-the-details opportunities--there are the years between STID and Beyond and their time on that nifty space station while they're waiting for the Enterprise to be rebuilt. Paramount did next to nothing to drum up excitement (that's a rant for another time). It's no wonder many fans have moved on :o(
Yeah, I've said a couple of times (hopefully I'm not repeating myself to you!) that I think Paramount has really mismanaged the franchise as a whole. They basically didn't acknowledge the 50th anniversary at all, I was gobsmacked.
Yep. I think Trek will likely never be the franchise it truly can be until it gets pried away from Paramount and CBS. I also think the lack of enthusiasm is in part due to the fact that much of it is so tonally different from itself--there's TOS, the first Trek movie, then the next 5 movies with the original crew. Really, the aesthetic and story approach between those three alone would have any non-fan convinced they were completely different properties and different universes, to say nothing of Next Gen and the whole Berman era. It's no wonder Trek fandom gets sliced into increasingly smaller subsets. I was hoping the Kelvin/Abrams movies would have the effect of reunifying the fandom, especially after going a couple of years without any Trek, but it's had the opposite effect. :o(
Yeah, I definitely see the fragmentation problem. That's a natural result, I think, of so much material being produced over such a long time frame. I mean, the series was 1966-1969, and the first movie didn't happen until 1979. Then everything more or less overlapped from then until 2001, at which point it was only Enterprise until 2005, and then nothing until the reboot in 2009.
Social attitudes in those four decades changed a lot. I think it might have held together better if we could have rendered Gene Roddenberry immortal, but sadly he stopped being involved towards the end of Next Gen... and that's exactly when the tone of the Trek verse started losing it's consistency. (Next Gen ended in 1994, Deep Space Nine start in 1993).
Up until Gene left, the universe had this unifying sense of positivity and hope. When his hand left the reins, this perception that things need to be "more realistic" started creeping into Trek, and it's never stopped.
I mean, as much as I enjoy the reboot, and as much as I loved Beyond, you can really see that with the whole "are we supposed to be out here" thing they threw into Beyond. At least it reaffirmed the "Better to die saving lives than to live taking them" side, though.
Er, I may be starting to rant. I'll leave it there, for now. //grins//
No worries. IDIC and all that. <g> Don't hate me, but I never cared for any of the sequel series from Next Gen through Enterprise. I honestly tried to, watched every single episode of Next Gen and DS9, but they all just ...miss for me for various (and even contradictory) reasons. It may be due to taking a break from Trek for a good 15 years, but upon my return I've found Kelvin Trek to be much closer to TOS than any of the previous incarnations, once you strip away the top notch production values (which I love and thought Trek was way overdue for). Perhaps it's fresh-eyes syndrome--? I acknowledge Trek has had to change in order to remain a viable commodity for Paramount and bring in new viewers. If it starts to turn me off then I'll simply tune out again. :o/
I grew up on Next Gen and only saw TOS later, so that probably accounts for my favorites. //grins// And I never got into the ones after Next Gen, myself, though I tried for at least a full year with all of them.
Don't hate me for this either! :D But I actually find the reboot to very, very different from TOS, characters aside. What unified TOS and Next Gen for me was hopefulness and philosophy, and the reboot didn't have either of those things, though Beyond brought them back as much as a summer action movie can.
I mean, I like the reboot a lot, but it's a different kind of liking.
I actually wish Trek hadn't changed in an attempt to keep up with perceptions of modern audience taste, because I honestly think it would have been better at retaining its audience if it hadn't. The Trek audience has always been a smaller subset--TOS was cancelled for poor viewership, after all. Although maybe that counters my argument right there. //wry//
I wonder sometimes if it's a case of Reboot's optimism getting lost in the dazzle of upgraded special effects and minimal preaching. Kirk was ready to extend a helping-hand to genocidal Romulans in the first movie (I totally don't blame Spock for saying hell no. His entire planet was destroyed. That's horrific and deserves more than make-nice platitudes), in Darkness Kirk momentarily loses his way, but he does see the error of letting anger rule his judgment and clearly grows by the end of the movie, not to mention the whole 911 commentary. In Beyond, as you pointed out, he declares he'd rather die trying to save lives than live taking them. There's morality there, it's just more of a doing kind rather than saying kind.
Abrams!Kirk I think gets unjustly faulted for not being TOS era Kirk who was already in his 30s when he took over the Enterprise and had already had command of a ship under his belt and had the benefit of growing up in a healthy and whole family setting. Abrams!Kirk comes from less than ideal background and was clearly meant to evolve over the course of several movies into the seasoned veteran we all know and admire.
I suppose we all use our entry-Trek as the standard to judge its other incarnations. Here's where it gets annoyingly contradictory for me: I also like the optimism and hope of the Trek world but in Next Gen (and the other Berman era spin-offs) it just annoyed the shit out of me--it was all so smug. I like a Trek world that's overall better than the one we live in now but not one that's utterly perfect. Ditto for the crew and Starfleet. And Reboot Trek is that, IMHO. :o)
Gads, I'm getting long-winded here but it's been a pleasure having a real Trek discussion with you, infiniteeight.
I don't mind long winded; that's about 90% of why I made this comm, so that I could talk to people properly again!
Hmmm, you know, you make a good point about Reboot's optimism getting lost in the dazzle. It's not just the special effects and the minimal preaching that overshadow it, I think--it's the fight scenes, whether in space or hand to hand.
When I really think about that, I wonder if a lot of that is a function of structure. A TV episode has only about 40-45 minutes (depending on commercial breaks) to make its point, so if you have a point to make, you keep action to a minimum and you pretty much have to have an expository moment just to tie things up. So the philosophy is much more in your face.
In a movie, you have about two hours, which means you can (or maybe even need to) put in something high energy like a fight scene to keep things moving, and you don't have to spell things out. But that also means that said high energy moment can easily distract from the rest.
I 100% agree with people faulting AOS!Kirk for not being TOS!Kirk. It drives me a little nuts when I see people making unfavorable comparisons because they come from such wildly different background, and we meet them at such different times in their lives. Of course they're different--and I admit that I rather like who AOS!Kirk grew into in Beyond rather better than I like TOS!Kirk.
Hmmm, yeah, I gotta give you the smugness. Can't argue with that, even if I do love Next Gen. //grins// I think the only time they really acknowledge that they still have things to learn is when Q goes to elaborate lengths to demonstrate that, by the way, humanity still has shit to learn! LOL.
I really like AOS!Kirk too. It's amazing how much more we know about him in comparison to TOS!Kirk. His maturation is progressing nicely. Can't wait to get my copy of Beyond tomorrow so I can re-watch it at a more leisurely pace. Saw it twice in the theater, I'm sure there's a lot that got by me.
I'm in the same position with Beyond -- saw it twice in theatre and can't wait to see it again. :D I'm probably going to suggest a couple of dates for a community rewatch, if you want to do a communal viewing.
Sounds like fun! I'm in.
What time zone are you in? We'll probably have multiple rewatch dates, because current timezones in the pool are Pacific Time, Eastern Time, Australian Eastern Time, and British Time. //wry//
That's a good idea. I'm on Central time, in Illinois. :o) Going to see Doctor Strange Friday night!
Oooh, Doctor Strange! I'm going on Sunday. I would go Friday, but one of my two usual viewing partners is away until Saturday night, so we're waiting for her. :D
Also, if you're going to be around and are in the moon to chat real time--and, er, maybe cheer me on while I try to finish a fic in time for the challenge deadline today--you could jump into the pinned chat post. I'm in there probably until almost midnight Pacific Time. :)
I forgot Imzy has chatrooms! Be right there.
Hello! I'm PeachesandBones, and I recently discovered TOS and fell in love! I imagine I'm one of the very few who ships McKirk in TOS, but that is OK! I write TOS McKirk fic, it's nothing spectacular but I feel it's my duty to add fic to such a rare ship. Out of the reboot, I've only seen Beyond, but I can't wait to watch 2009 so I can appreciate where all the AOS shippers fell in love.
I actually joined this community because I saw the TOS rewatch threads and I got super excited! Plus, I can't navigate Tumblr or LJ anymore, so I'm glad this platform has come up.
You're not entirely alone shipping TOS McKirk! I know there are a couple others here. :D I do my best to remember to include TOS content regularly, though I know McKirk does tend to lean AOS. I encourage you to post TOS stuff--I'm probably not familiar with a lot of it! Particularly if you find TOS art to link to. I've been looking, but good god that's rare stuff.
The TOS rewatch has been fun so far, and it's only getting better as our membership grows. :D
I appreciate your dedication to including TOS. It gets lonely in the 60s sometimes :)
I found a TOS McKirk fan video that I'll post!
I've been that minority shipper with no home. I'm not going to relegate anyone else to that peering about for anyone else to squee with. //grins//
Ooh, we're definitely short on vids. :D
Hello,
Just joined a moment ago and thought I should introduce myself. I grew up on TNG and the original series movies, but never watched TOS until this summer. I was stupidly excited when the alternate original series movies started up and loved them, but only fell down the fandom rabbit hole with Beyond.
Much like what I've seen a lot of comments saying I'm a stalwart Spirk fan when it comes to the original series, but I am all about Kirk/McCoy in the reboot. It just makes sense to me in this universe. Kind of weird to be working through the original series while reading fanfic and following Kirk/McCoy groups at the same time.
I'm American, but live in Japan and was lucky enough to get to see Beyond in the States in August and then again in 4D when it finally came out here in Japan a couple weeks ago. Usually I'm a lurker in communities, but I might try to be more outgoing here. We'll see. :-)
Welcome! Your timeline of fannishness is much like mine, though I did see TOS earlier. But otherwise basically the same. :D
For me, watching TOS while being involved in Kirk/McCoy is kind of like taking a course in how relationships change and grow differently depending on circumstances. Makes for a lot of potential interesting discussion--I have a whole spiel about the difference in Spock's emotional development and how that impacts his friendship with Kirk.
Oh, man, that would have been a heck of a long wait! I'm glad you had the chance to see it in August.
Lurkers are always welcome, but if you feel the urge to interact, we'd be glad to chat. :D
I love the idea of timing...like Kirk/Spock would have been a thing, but Kirk and Bones met a much different point in their lives, when they were far more emotionally impressionable. And they ended up forming this intense friendship that just didn't have room for Spock, at least not in the same way it exists in the TOS universe. And Uhura steps up and fills in that intimate emotional gap, so you end up with more of a quadrangle formed by two couples. It's a lot like that movie Sliding Doors. It is really fascinating to me how the universe has evolved with a different set of starting variables. And its recognizably Trek, but shifted like ninety degrees so that it's like looking into a distorted mirror. Not THE Mirror Universe, but a nearby one.
Interestingly, rather than Jim and Bones's friendship not having room for Spock--although I totally see that--the main thought I had was that Spock connected with Uhura before meeting Jim, and therefore much of the work he had to do in accepting his own emotional side was something that Uhura helped him with. Whereas in TOS-verse, that was emotional work that Kirk did, which is where I always felt a huge chunk of TOS Kirk and Spock closeness came from.
Not to mention, now that I think of it, that AOS!Kirk isn't really in a position to help AOS!Spock work through his emotions, even if Uhura didn't have that pretty much covered. AOS!Kirk has too many issues of his own. He and Bones sort of muddle their way through their issues together, but not in any fashion that I think would benefit a Vulcan.
Hello! Also a lifelong Trekkie, ALSO a Kirk/Spock or OT3 for TOS and Kirk/McCoy and Spock/Uhura for AOS. Though truthfully I will read anything well-written with decent internal justification, even especially rare pairings etc. My first fic for McKirk is something called Stranded Together, which can be found on AO3 under subobscura if you want to check that out. Which reads complete on its own, but is really serving as the Prologue for my NaNoWriMo, and is also McKirk. Um, as far as this fandom, I lurked during the livejournal heyday in '09/'10, but I was working a ton at the time and didn't have time to actively participate. I've seriously missed having a comm like this to play in, trying to get back into fandom post-Beyond. I love tumblr, it's like crack, but I've missed discussion posts and squeeing and such, which is vital for my writing process. Motivation, doncha know. So thanks for starting this up, I hadn't even heard about it until I read fin's announcements on AO3. :-)
Welcome! I have read Stranded Together and it was excellent, though I may not have commented--I sometimes have real anxiety about commenting on fic on AO3, which is kind of hilarious given how much I comment on everything here on imzy... //wry//
I totally hear you re: discussion posts and squee being necessary for writing. For me, it's like writing is fannish energy output, and I need some energy input if I'm going to keep it up, and having other people to engage with is input. If that makes sense. :)
(I just clicked into chat for the first time today, because I've been out with friends, and realized I told you about it in another comment and now see you totally found it already. lol. Excellent! :D)
Yes, I need to bounce my ideas off other people. Plus I love the ideas that come up in long discussions, or observations that I missed but are really spot-on as far as characterization.
Also thank you for the high praise on my story- I was shocked when people liked it so much, since I usually write in X-Files, which at this point is a much smaller fandom. I was like whoa! Clicks! Comments! What do I do now, haha! And this fic...this fic, man. Picture me saving it from falling off a cliff, "I'm not abandoning you. Don't you dare let go! I'm not leaving you behind!"
Now I'm picturing the fic being like Jim in the 2009 Trek, constantly hanging off the edge of cliffs and catwalks and getting hauled back up just in the nick of time. lol. //hefts a coil of rope, just in case of rescue needs//
I admit, I had no idea X-Files was even active still! Although I guess fandoms never really die. :)
Hello, all! I see that it's been a while since the last time anyone posted here, but just wanted to say hi :) I'm Rei and after three, four years of not shipping anything for Trek Reboot - I came into this fandom with STID, which (unpop opinion, I know!) I actually liked despite the quite obvious flaws - Kirk/McCoy finally stole my heart. (Kirk/Spock and Spock/McCoy just never really got any serious traction with me, despite the amount of fic I've read, especially for the former.) I'm really glad to see an Imzy community, because it's harder to talk with other shippers on tumblr and kind of feels like you're talking into the void. I'm also tentatively writing a Kirk/McCoy post-STB fic right now, but I'm a super slow writer so I'll likely check in 84 years later with the finished product, haha. Anyway, it's super nice to be here!
Oh, no, I posted in the wrong place! Booo me :(
Not exactly the wrong place, just not the most public place! I totally encourage you to make a post directly to the comm--either this one or another one. :D
Er, it may have been awhile since anyone commented on the welcome post, but I've literally never missed a Pic of the Day, and there are a couple of people who comment on the off topic posts, and the new TOS discussion post just went up this morning... The comm is active, I promise!
Regardless, we're glad to have you here. :D I completely understand what you mean about talking into the void on tumblr. It's the main reason I made this place!
You're always welcome to make a post to talk about anything Kirk/McCoy that's on your mind, or to share stuff you wander across or weird little Kirk/McCoy thoughts. Member posts 10000% encouraged. :D
Ah dw, I meant just about the welcome post - I can definitely see that the comm is active! And I'll re-post my intro comment to the comm directly. Thank you for the warm welcome; you're doing a lovely job here. =]
Imzy is smaller than some other platforms, so I can't help but worry that folks won't come hang out because there aren't already a thousand people chatting away. //sheepish// I can't help but feel that even if we don't have as much traffic as tumblr, the interaction is more the kind that I enjoy, though. :)

Have an official welcome! :D We're glad to have you here. I totally understand about being afraid to post fic--I still have to sort of psych myself up to hit the post button, a lot of the time!
Sometimes the characters who make us work to understand them are the ones we end up understanding the best. :) I admit that I have more trouble with Jim than anyone else--his personality is very, very different from mine. I find Spock easier than Jim!
Hello! I'm here because Fin is very persuasive with their fantastic Kirk/McCoy fic. I am an avid consumer of fannish material and I hope I can contribute some here, too.
Kees! You're here! :D :D :D Thank you for letting me lure you into me new pairing and my new platform. lol. I'm loving imzy, I really hope it does well.
It has some growing to do. I'm trying the app on my phone right now and there's a lot of stuff it opens browsers for which is annoying, lol. But I am here! And I've made a "community" so I can blog. Maybe here I'll actually post shit instead of reblogging
The app is also... not entirely up to scratch. They know it has bugs and they're working on it actively, though. Visiting on the desktop is better.
I have a blog myself over at /infiniteeight You are welcome to follow me, if you don't already. It's been awhile since I mentioned it on tumblr. I post there pretty regularly these days.
I noticed! It was how I figured out to do my own, heh. And sure, I'll follow 💜
I'm happy to be here. I write only Jim/Bones on AO3. Love that pairing. I also like Spock/Uhura, but haven't had the nerve to write anything with these two characters, except incidentally in my Jim/Bones fics. Spock is hard to write IMO. Don't know much about imzy yet, but looking forward to finding out more. I'm wondering about cross posting from AO3 to here...is that ok to do?
Welcome! I don't know if you've found it or not, but there's a Spock/Uhura community on imzy, too! https://www.imzy.com/spock_uhura_fans
Cross-posting from AO3 is absolutely OK! I think imzy's post character limit is something like 18,000 characters, but you can also just post links. That's what I've done with my longer fic.
Thanks so much for your prompt reply. It took me a while to get comfortable on AO3, so I'll probably wait a while before I post here. (Shyness is my middle name)
No worries, take your time, settle in. :)
Hello! I followed infiniteeight here because of her awesome Kirk/McCoy fics. I feel a little overwhelmed by the new place, but I'm happy to be here. I am a fairly new Star Trek fan, however the Kirk/McCoy love grabbed me right away.
Thanks for including me and hugs to all!
Welcome! I know new platforms can be kind of scary as you work out how they work and what the etiquette is, but I'm so glad folks are letting me lead them over here. I like chatting with people about the pairings I love, and it's a lot easier to do that on imzy than on tumblr or AO3. :D
Hi! I asked Fin for a code ages ago and completely forgot I joined until I read her (Her? Yes? Bad assumption?) new story today!
I'm Tee and I've been a fan of Star Trek since it was first on TV. Yes. I'm very very old. :D
I never considered Kirk/McCoy until the new films, but now I'm hooked on the idea!
Heya! 'Her' is a correct assumption. :) And welcome! I do wonder how many people forget they joined after they got a code--I suspect most folks don't check imzy every day just yet. We have daily content now, though it sometimes is just the Pic of the Day, so hopefully that changes!
Pshaw, old. Tumblr thinks I'm old, too. It's all about how you feel. //grins//
A lot of us came to Kirk/McCoy with the reboot movies! :D IDIC, right?
Hello! Super excited to have you here :D
I'm watching TOS at this moment (just about to start S3!), and from a shipping aspect, I'm finding I prefer different ones from AOS. It's p interesting x,D.
But yeah, I was p much 100% Kirk/McCoy since their first scene together. xD.
Hello everyone! Thanks very much for accepting me! I've been a loyal shipper of McKirk ever since Karl Urban played the doctor and it was just mind-blowing. I'm thinking of watching TOS someday, hope you guys here will guide me through it ;)
Hey!! Good to see you here :D.
I'm actually in the middle of watching TOS! It's different, in a familiar way, if that makes sense? It actually took me a little while to settle into it after coming from AOS -- which I think is because of the huge action aspect of the reboot (the tech! the CGI!), and the difference/s in characterisation (TOS Kirk having been the captain for some years, that sort of thing).
Anyway, I won't ramble at you about it :D BUT GIVE US A YELL WHEN YOU DO WATCH IT!!
Hey there, welcome! Oh, Karl, he has great powers of conversion, I know them well. //grins// I've seen TOS before and have been trying to rewatch it, but I keep getting distracted by things like making this comm. lol.
Hey fin - thanks so much for the information on tumber! I am new to Star Trek as a fanfic community, but I've been a McCoy die-hard since the 1980s. Shipping and fanfic didn't come for thirty years after that, but I'm happy to have ended up here. I haven't jumped in and written any McKirk fanfic (still stuck in Clint Barton's world and many boyfriends/wife mode) but I hope to try sometime soon (after I finish the giant Clint/Phil/Bruce story, ugh). I'm glad you did this, because this site seems super-cool!
No problem! Thanks for coming on over--I'm really enjoying it here and am hoping that fandom thrives on imzy. :D
Is there anything I can bribe you with to get you writing McKirk? //grinning// I know, I know, it all depends on the muse, but we're a little light on writers atm. Hopefully the upcoming challenge will help with that a bit. Regardless, good luck with the giant story!
Hi, I'm synoa, thank you infiniteeight for inviting me. I have been a Star Trek fan for most of my life (grew up with TOS thanks to my parents, fell in love with Voyager and am familiar with all the other series). I quietly ship Kirk/Spock in my corner but when I saw this pairing I got stuck. Even if, now that I think about it, I did write a onesided Kirk/McCoy after the reboot came out. Just forgot the pairing even existed after that :D Probably because Bones in TOS clearly loves women and that kind of transferred to the reboot despite the fact the only woman he ever talks about is his ex wife...
Welcome! These boys can be sneaky. You're not planning to ship them, but the next thing you know, there's a fic or two lying around. //grins//
HI! I'm so glad you made this! I was thinking about it but I'm far too lazy. XD
anyways, I am a huge Kirk/McCoy fan. ID made me kinda give up on the franchise, but Beyond has hauled me right back in.
Welcome! The first thing I thought of when I joined imzy was a Kirk/McCoy community, but it took me a week to talk myself into making it. LOL. When I love a thing, I can't help trying to fill the gaps.
I totally understand about ID. I almost didn't go see Beyond, either, but hearing about how Karl didn't have to come back, but chose to, and how Simon co-wrote the script gave me faith, and I'm so glad I did. You could really tell Beyond was made by a Trek fan. <3
I was the same with ID! I stopped writing Trek entirely after that. It was like everything I loved about the 2009 film was torn apart and stomped upon by ID. I only went to see Beyond because my father wanted a movie buddy and I grudgingly agreed, and I'm so glad I did. Beyond was wonderful, a complete 180 from ID. :D
A Kirk/McCoy comm! I've been hopping to stumble across a place where folks love the grumpy Southern doctor and the energetic, overeager captain as much as I do. :D
I was also a TNG baby, and worked backwards from there, watching the TOS movies before discovering the TOS television series. Star Trek has always been a part of my life, but I never felt a particular fandom attraction to it until I saw the 2009 AOS movie. I went in fully expecting to emerge a Kirk/Spock shipper, since that seems to be the dominant ship in the original series, but, wow, watching Karl Urban and Chris Pine together 100% turned me to Kirk/McCoy and I've been happily reading, writting, and fangirling over them ever since. :D
Welcome! I really waffled about making the comm at first--responsibility!--but I'm super happy that I did. It's been so awesome gathering up people who love the guys like I do and see the awesome chemistry between them. <3
Die hard Jim/Bones shipper here, always have been and I'm DELIGHTED that the reboot has brought so many more people over to the McKirk side of things :)
(Although Karl Urban's tweet about how Mcock should be an option nearly killed me...)
Welcome! I'm glad the invasion of people triggered by the reboot has been a good experience. I've been in small fandoms/pairings when they blow up and sometimes it can be a really tough transition. I think it maybe helps that it's canon that both versions of the characters exist, instead of one replacing the other--I was so pleased with that in the original movie. And I totally have a half finished not-quite-crack bunny in which the AOS folks meet the TOS folks. //grins//
I'd definitely be up for reading that crack bunny :) I ship Jim & Bones in both 'verses, but I can see how Jim/Spock work in TOS.
I love it when reboots bring in new fans, and then they go and discover the original stuff for the first time and the quality and range of fic and art and squee just increases exponentially. (My first ship was ACD Holmes/Watson, so this applies to a certain extent...) XD
I'm totally new to Imzy (although from reading a few comments, I think we all are) but I'm ready to give this a try! So my name's Emily, and I only just recently got into Star Trek (I watched the first reboot movie on the day of the 50th anniversary, and watched Into Darkness the next day, and Beyond the day after that) after being persuaded by my best friend and tumblr. Somehow I fell into this ship and it's been all Star Trek all the time for the past two months. I've written a bit for this ship, but haven't posted anything because I've been too busy reading as many fics as possible instead of actually trying to write a nice story.
I had started watching TOS but with it being fifty years old, I found it a little difficult to really get in to, so I've switched to TNG for now, but plan on going back and finishing TOS and delving deeper into the beauty that is Kirk/Bones, because this ship is beautiful enough to have two different mediums we can watch them on!
Welcome, both to Imzy and the community! It's such a new platform, we're all still getting comfy here. But I think you'll like it -- it's a lot easier to feel a part of a community with a shared interest, that's for sure. :)
I totally understanding gorging on reading fic before letting the muses loose. :D You should totally pop into the live chat sometime--in addition to random chatting (which we do plenty of) there are folks in there who are great at helping the writing folk stay on task. Of course, sometimes they distract with new bunnies, too. But it's all fun. //grins//
Yeah, there's definitely some production/acting style and social things that can make TOS feel a bit odd. I grew up on TNG myself, though I watched TOS later. Kirk/Bones has a pretty different feel in TOS versus AOS, but it's fun to check out the differences. :D
Hi! I friggin looooove McKirk and I've been trying to write a novel length fic for ages. If anyone wants to be a beta and person to bounce ideas off of, I would be the most eternally greatful. It's a modern high school AU full of themes like homophobia, mental illness, and dysfunctional families. Lots of symbolism because I'm trash, and slow build. I'm hella perfectionistic so I go a little crazy on editing and writers block.
Hey there! Welcome to the comm! You'll probably get more attention for your beta-seeking if you make your own post to the comm. That's totally allowed. :D
Hi! My Name is Lai (or my handles for tumblr is usually Laipin/Laibun) I saw this post and was excited :D I'm a huge mckirk fan~ (but i like other pairings too) but definitely Mckirk is my precious. I don't write fics etc (even if i wish i could ;3;) But when I have time I do draw fanart of them~ <3 It would be nice to meet new peeps :D
Welcome! I'm so glad to be meeting other McKirk folks. I have such a hard time communicating on tumblr, so I've never really managed it before.
I have to grin, because you fanart and wish you could fic, and I fic and wish I could fanart. Never enough McKirk content!
Hi! Nice to see everyone! I've been a McKirk shipper since I watched the first AOS movie (which also got me into the rest of Star Trek). I just really love them and I'm super glad you made this! I almost did but I'm scared of fandom responsibility /o\ hah!
Welcome! I tried to resist the siren call of fandom administration, but Karl Urban was too much for me. LOL. And it's been so nice to talk to people properly--boy, did I miss threaded commenting on tumblr!
