Hair shapes?
Hey, Kienan, I was wondering if you had any advice or tips on coming up with shapes in a hairstyle for a piece.
I find myself either spitting out random shapes until I like something or just scrolling through a google image search to find something appealing, and just working with shapes from that. I just feel like that process is really inefficient and wastes a TON of time.
Thank you for your time, my dude.

I second this question! This is something I need to improve as well.

Cheers!
One trick I find super useful is thinking of the silhouette when thinking of a hair style. I usually block out very VERY simple shapes around the head, usually with plain straight lines. If you ever find yourself stuck, try drawing stars or circles or other big basic shapes, and start working from there. If you have trouble deciding the weight and direction of hair, try defaulting to a line of action, instead of hair at a resting position. It can help you figure out how different hair types move and fall, as well as give your piece a bit of flow.
IMO i think the most important thing is the silhouette. If you work on creating different silhouettes for each character, you'll make new hair styles in no time
But regardless, here are some neat tutorials i've used in the past!

These are anatomy sketches, but there's good silhouette/movement references here - http://laurabragasketch.blogspot.hk/2012/09/hi-everyone-there-are-some-anatomical.html

Hopefully that was helpful! I probably didn't answer your exact question... but at least it's some related info lmao? good luck!
