Hairspiration?
Hey Kienen and everyone! I'd like to ask how you all get inspirations for your characters hairstyles. While we're at it, how do you guys make your character more memorable in general? Thanks! :)

For hair...I'm not the one to ask. It's definitely far from a strength of mine.
As far as making characters memorable...that's where you can really have some fun. I do a bunch of very fast, very loose sketches and let my mind wander. What does this character DO? What kind of world do they live in, where did they grow up, what sorts of things would they find precious and keep with them?
Visually, Like OaknOats said, silhouettes are key. That applies to hair as well as every other part of a design. If you are creating something from scratch, you could even try a process we used in a concept class: scribble a silhouette first, literally scribble, using a big chunky brush of some kind. THEN work to try to make that silhouette into something cool, changing as little of the outside shape as you can.
first I think about what kind of character I am making. I think about their purpose in the world and then I focus on their personality and attitude. Then I flesh out the shape of the hair, I think the shape of the hair affects the shape of the face and the mood of the piece ... If I know I want to do a certain hairstyle like a bob or something but can't figure out how it sits on the face then I usually go on to Pinterest and have a look at that hairstyle :)
For my hairstyles I look at pictures of unique celebrity hairstyles or hipster ones. Otherwise I just steal from real life/friends and exagarate
A few years ago I've started saving pictures as reference/inspiration for each character in something of a scrapbook style, then opening them when I draw a character from scratch, retrying until it looks like something the character would actually wear. To make them memorable, remember that distinct silhouettes are the key. I tend to exaggerate their hairstyle's prominent features until it becomes unfitting or impractical for the character (unless it's supposed to be). Hope that helps
Thanks for the replies!! Really helps a bunch! :D
