Integrating disparate style inspirations
How is that for a wordy title?
So I have a lot of different artists that I love, and if I sit down I can imitate each one of them decently, but I feel like I have a hard time integrating them into my own style. I know on a certain level it will just 'happen,' but certain artists I really loved are defined by characteristics that are the exact opposite of those belonging to others.
For instance, I really love painterly, impressionistic work (a la everyone from Sargent to Craig Mullins) but I also enjoy really graphic work as well – pieces that feature sharper edges, more line work, etc., which are elements that feel totally antithetical to an impressionistic approach. It often feels like there's just no middle ground, so my portfolio doesn't feel cohesive. How can I conquer this hurdle and integrate more styles into my pool of influences?

You're allowed to have more than one method of working! :) Try combining them - have hard edges and graphic shadows, but have soft painting for ambient occlusion or temperature changes, for example. I've seen some successful combinations of the graphic style and painterly, I'll post next time I come across them. Unfortunately there's no black and white answer, a lot of it comes down to experimentation and figuring out what you like among the styles. Maybe try a simple piece in one style, then do it again in the other style, then maybe try it again and mish mash your favorite parts together.
I'd create a portfolio with each style. Some people may relate to a more painterly style, while others may want a sharper graphic look. Play to your audience. And if nothing else, like Megillakitty said, over time I guarantee you will find a way to combine them ; )
