Perspective in art?
Maybe it's just me but I feel like I have some problems with conveying the sense of 3-D into my art. Even if the background is plain I don't think the character pops out enough. I feel like I have some lighting issues and am unsure of where I want light A to come from. It seems like some other people's anime art: http://naturaljuice.deviantart.com/gallery/ seems to have more dimensions than my semi realistic art: http://www.deviantart.com/art/Miku-2017-653370392 . I did one piece where it felt a little bit 3-D but not as much that's more anime like: http://www.deviantart.com/art/Secret-Santa-Kukinima-650582527 still feels like it's missing that extra dimension.
I'm not sure what I'm lacking but I want to improve on this for 2017 and see some actual improvements in my coloring and I will work more on coloring clothing ruffles and drawing hands! Maybe I just need more studies in my life.

If you put a sphere into a room with lots of diffused light and no strong directional light, you will still be able to see at a glance that it is a sphere in three dimensional space. That is because as forms turn away from us, the light isn't reflected directly back at our eyes. Taking your recent piece as an example, it looks flat because there isn't enough difference between the edge of her leg and the middle of her leg, even though the edge of her leg is facing almost completely off to the side and should be colored differently.
This isn't easy to describe, but I immediately recalled an old video on Dave Rapoza's channel where he was live streaming and explained to his viewers (while working on a piece) how to paint forms in 3-D. It should come in handy.
You've done half the battle already: finding a specific area you'd like to improve. The other half is doing studies centered around that until you're good at it.
I sort of get what you're saying that even if there is light it's not always as straight forward as I think it is I still have to pay attention to the form of the figure. Like the shapes if it's round, flat and etc? I think i'm thinking of light too simply which is part of my problem. I don't think it's easy to describe as well :/ I had some struggles typing up what I meant LOL
I will definitely watch that video and practice harder on this for next year. Thanks so much @Tygrenier ! I can't wait to get started :)
@Tygrenier I get it now it's about viewing everything as shapes. I should probably do some geometric studies of the body more then. I think Kienan's planes of the face tutorial taught me well the shapes of the face. I'd like to find some videos on the shapes of the body and maybe study some clothes shapes more.
