Question about art direction
Hey Hey,
So I have a question about directing myself through art, I used to draw a few characters here and there and some illustrations. But recently due to my internship at a game company I've been pushed into drawing animals. This is when I realized, I freaking love drawing animals, I think I like it way more than drawing humans? And for a reference I don't mean drawing animals as in drawing them as furries. I'll include a picture from an animal I've drawn recently I guess. So to get to a point, my question is, is it an actual valid option to become a creature/animal artist in the gaming industry. I'd think it's better to stear that direction anyways because soooooo many people do characters anyways and most games are filled to the bone with animals.. But still, is it usefull I push my portfolio towards an animal/ creature artist? And if so should I do 1 animal a month or just make tons of animals?

I have minimal experience in the game industry but YES its totally viable to do creature art! You can absolutely set yourself on that career path, and i would absolutely boost your portfolio with that artwork. One thing i learned about building a portfolio is that you should put the things you love making in the front? So if you love drawing animals and creatures you should emphasize that. And in terms of pacing, I would just make tons of animals. Its always nice to have a bunch of things to pick from to put on your portfolio, and its good practice. Win-win really, but don't wear yourself out.
Also that horse is beautiful! 11/10 would take on a magical journey
AND feel free to correct me on any of this! This is mostly just tidbits of things i've learned, and I'm 110% certain someone else here knows more about this subject than i do lmao
Haha thanks <3 The tons of animals was more like do I focus on felines for a month so I can draw them perfectly, maybe even from my mind at some point. I mean when you can draw a horse you can draw a giraffe aswell most of the time. so that's kind of what I meant with that. But I can see why just drawing a shitload of animals would be appealing aswell, then again I still have a good 2 years before I need to find a job. Maybe even 6 haha
Morrigansdemon hit it just right. It's completely fine to focus primarily on animals/creatures. Lots of bigger companies especially will look to hire people that specialize in one subject. For instance, Blizzard hires people that only work on "props"...that is, no humans or creatures, no environments, just random objects like buckets or barrels or fountains etc etc.
As a caveat, I suggest still having other things in your portfolio just to show you're not limited, just specialized.
O currently I'm making a shitload of props so I think I got props covered in my portfolio right now +_+, but I feel what you mean. Maybe if I focus on animals I could make 1 piece with a character and that animal?
