the artist formerly known as krusca. my fandom scribbles+wips+musings (lots o stevetony but also other ships too)
happy saturday but w t f.. (truth slash fiction)
so i woke up early to try and get a table for SacAnime (and failed they sold out in 4 mins) but anyways
the trailer for it dropped but its abt a bunch of (straight) girls writing RPS fanfic?? what the actual fuck??????????????????????????????????????????????
its based on 1D Larries and theyre freaking out but im sitting here disgusted like, are they srsly fetishizing queerness and making the main charcs hets and trying to make a tv show out of that like , wtf..... this is horrible like look at what the director writers are saying
yes its gr8 how fandom and fics can bring anyone together and write wonderful things but??? oh my god this is a bunch of (probably straight) white grown men making a show abt fandom and fanfic and my skin is c r a w l i n g
i genuinely dont care what ppl ship but this is mainstream media exploiting fandom as "Quirky Fun Things Str8 Teen Girls Do" and queerness is "hot" as if it some sort of fantasy for str8 ppl, this is literally using queerness as enertainment for straight ppl...... this is gonna make SO MANY QUEER PPL HATE FANDOM AND NEVER JOIN IT this is just , so awful if it does get picked up by any networks its gonna do SO MUCH DAMAGE i hate this so much
@pensversusswords did a great thread on twitter on why this is super gross
like. jfc i KNOW fandom i wide and diverse and yea 1D does seem to be str8 teen girls but fuck this is why fandoms going down the drain fandom is a community it shouldnt be dragged out into the public to either be mocked at (like when interviewers show fanart or reaf fics to celebs) or for str8 white men to exploit and tell OUR narrative of to make money off of us?????
thoughts? disagreements? outrage?

Wow, this is...fucking horrific. Like. Okay, I hate RPF on a moral and personal level, I'll be honest about that. On the other hand, I do understand that young women - even straight ones - are often scorned for their sexuality and sexual desires and deserve a safe outlet. But I have the feeling that this is going to portray "straight white young girls writing RPF" as the majority of people who make up the fanfic writing community, and NOTHING could be farther from the truth. RPF is one of the most hated things in large parts of the fandom community, and basically all the people I've met in fandom use at least one of the LGBTQ+ labels, and some more than one. This is...god. And this is probably going to be one of the first pieces of mainstream exposure that fandom gets. Why. Why. Ugh.
Well you already know how I feel about this catastrophe, but yeah. Gross. Shit like this is why we don't get taken seriously and contributes to the difficulties queer people face trying to get representation in mainstream media. I've been fuming mad about it all day.
yeuup im just hoping this never actually goes thru and no one picks it up and it disappears into oblivion as fandom history
Of course it's about straight girls. Of course it is. sets watch for the countdown to more endless rounds of 'slashers are all straight women appropriating queerness/fetishizing gay men' wank where the countless lgbt slashers who make up something like a third of fandom are repeatedly ignored
It's funny, when I first started reading and writing slash, I was terrified that my parents would find out and immediately deduce my obvious gayness from it - it seems like the only reasonable conclusion to draw, "reading gay porn = obvious intense interest in gayness = possible lesbian." Yet over fifteen years later, the media narrative and main fandom narrative is still that slashers are mostly straight ( and if DFAB slashers say we're bisexual women or gay men, we're of course clearly lying for imaginary slasher queer cred or something, and if we're lesbians, well, we're probably still straight women lying because everyone knows slash is mostly written by straight girls).
Im honestly getting a headache thinking abt the repercussions of if this show DOES air everythign abt this reeks of homophic queer exploitation & i can see this bringing in a whole new wave of fans who come into the fandom with a completely wrong mindset (ie this place is to fetishize real and fictional men for their pleasure while reinforcing the idea fandom is a straight women thing) The fact that this show frames shipping& fanfic as something outrageous and scandalous like -gasp- there are teen girls to write abt hot guys having sex- and its all done by men...who arent part of fandom theyre not part of this subculture& dont understand just how diverse and far reaching fandom is...it sets me on edge theres so much of it that signals exploitation and i hope it dies soon tbh)
this show frames shipping& fanfic as something outrageous and scandalous like -gasp- there are teen girls to write abt hot guys having sex- and its all done by men...who arent part of fandom
Yeah, I can't see that going anyplace good. Or really any place that's not "look at the silly girls and their weird porn, who would ever imagine that any celebrity or fictional character was gay, haha, so weird, isn't fanfic bizarre and aren't these girls super-obsessed like Twilight fans (BTW did you know 50 Shades of Grey started as a Twilight fanfic? No, we the media haven't mentioned that enough yet?) and isn't female adolescent sexuality just soooo mockable, almost as 'hilarious' as gayness, amirite?"
the actual trailer/what the writer/director is saying seems to imply that they're gonna be a bit more respectful than that but at the same time if the writers dont do that, the fact this show would be part of accessible mainstream media means it WILL be subject to ridicule and perpetuate idea that fandom IS about fetishizing gay men ughhhh i want to get back to when noone knew what fandom was
Ugh, I fucking hate this.
Fandom helped me accept being gay. Gave me an outlet to write some stories. Gave me stories that mirrored my own experiences and helped me come to terms that happened to me.
Sure, some parts of fandom has its faults. We've all seen how blatantly racist/misogynistic it can be, and it's definitely weird/uncomfortable at times (for me, personally) being a gay guy in fandom and seeing shit like "a straight conversion camp AU would be soooo cute" or "xyz is a man's man and doesn't have those wimpy emotion that you all write about."
But to make fandom entirely about straight girls (Furthermore, most likely all white, ignoring the fact that there's plenty of PoC in fandom from outside of just america, whose cultural experiences also shape fandom for them [Also ignoring Fandom providing a space for exchange of ideas internationally]) is just.... such a major disservice.
yea fandom DOES have its faults no doubt, considering ppl in fandom are born and raised in todays shitty society, but at the same time its such an outlet for creativity esp for the marginalized groups of ppl ...so this show made by (im assumign) str8 white men feat, str8 white girls is just ://///
(plus the fact its about RPS just....kinda makes my skin crawl because its only gonna encourage those young kids to harass real celebs...)
