Thoughts about live chat in communities

A few days ago, @Dan asked if we would like community chat rooms and something he called a "generic chat room." I don't understand what a "generic chat room" is and asked about it, but haven't seen a response. (That doesn't mean that there wasn't a response, because I'm having trouble following the live chat comments for Dan's post.)

At any rate, I thought I would share my thoughts about live chat in Imzy communities, and see if other people want the same thing.

  1. As someone who has run a weekly Twitter chat for four years, has a FB community for that chat, and started an Imzy community for members of that chat, I am excited about the idea of also being able to have a community live chat room on Imzy, especially since I'm concerned about the future of Twitter. This chat is a "come one, come all" sort of thing, so I would want anyone on Imzy to be able to see and join it. (I'd also love the ability to banish trolls and chat-jackers, which I don't have on Twitter.)

  2. I have another FB community that I think would be happier on Imzy -- if I can get them to try it -- because many of them are very concerned about their privacy, and I think Imzy protects it well. If this group wants live chat, they would like private live chat, held behind the walls of a private community.

  3. A chat post would definitely not do what I'm thinking; a chat room would be more like it. (I'm flashing back to IRC chat rooms in the '90s!)
