Why did Imzy ban one of my community leaders with no explanation?

One of my community leaders Netscape was offed with no explanation from Imzy. Here's his side of the story. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PMRyH_SI1Hk

    Hi.

He was given a reason when it happened. I'm not going to go into the reason here because it's his personal business, as far as we are concerned. It would be inappropriate to go over a private exchange between us and a user in a public forum, especially when they are unable to respond. It's not fair and, imo, it's unethical.

Our policy was violated. It was not the first time. We took the action that was needed.

EDIT!!! We are locking this thread is it is no longer productive. If you wish to continue a conversation started in the comments and not addressed, please do so in a new thread.

      I love this site.

        We love you!

    • fluffywhitethingSep 12, 2016 at 3:19 PM

I like that you're keeping it between you and him. This is the correct stance. That this is being brought up here at all is ridiculous. Thank you for all the work you're doing to keep Imzy the great community it is.

      • JessicaSep 12, 2016 at 3:29 PM

        Thank you!

I really believe in privacy even if remaining quiet has the potential for false information to spread. I haven't watched the video so I'm not accusing them of that here. It's definitely something we dealt with at reddit though : )

      • fluffywhitethingSep 12, 2016 at 3:32 PM

Privacy is important, and it increases my trust in you, at the very least. Thank you for being real.

Ooh, is that Pluto and Charon? My favorite binary dwarf planet system! Awesomesauce indeed.

      • willhicksSep 12, 2016 at 4:00 PM

Netscape game me permission to air his dirty laundry. All he said was he got a warning for something he posted and then out of the blue was banned. Is this the official policy?

      • JessicaSep 12, 2016 at 4:05 PMΔ

        @fluffywhitething ,It's kind of mesmerizing though : )

      • JessicaSep 12, 2016 at 4:10 PM

@willhicks I don't think it's terribly productive to debate this in a third person fashion.

We told him what the issue was when it happened. I'm not going to go into it any further than that.

    • AnonFeedbackJulissaSep 12, 2016 at 4:04 PM

What I'm worried about now is whether or not the Imzy servers are secure. A lot of us have a lot of personal information stored in our accounts (phone numbers, addresses, etc.) and now imzy is going to be a target.

I, for one, am deleting any personally-identifiable information from my account, and won't add it back until we are assured that the imzy servers are 100% secure.

      • KaelaSep 12, 2016 at 4:06 PM

Hi, we take privacy and security extremely importantly and have spent a LOT of time doing all we can to make sure that everything is 100% secure. What is it that made you concerned that we weren't?

      • AnonFeedbackJulissaSep 12, 2016 at 4:07 PM

I'm just paranoid. I have way too much experience on Reddit with being doxxed, and I don't want it to happen again. And these guys' only tool is hacking in the first place.

      • KaelaSep 12, 2016 at 4:10 PM

Ok. Well, we knew early on that security had to be a big priority for us because we allow payments and multiple profiles and such all on one account, and that means your information needs a lot of extra protection. So we've done a lot with this. That's also why, for example, we took the time to make sure we had 2FA when we launched, so that users can also do all they can on their side to make sure their accounts are super secure.

      • AnonFeedbackJulissaSep 12, 2016 at 4:11 PM

Ok. Cool. I'm not a programmer, so I don't know how all these things work, but I figured if the DNC can be hacked, Imzy could be too.

      • AnonConfinementArturoSep 12, 2016 at 4:13 PM

Well, anything can be hacked. But the wimminh8ers are not Russia.

      • KaelaSep 12, 2016 at 4:16 PM

Yes, of course there is never any perfect guarantee—the government has been hacked, other governments have been hacked, sites that have literally thousands more developers than us have been hacked, so anyone who says they are completely unhackable is claiming to be the Titanic, and we know how that went... But we've done and continue to do all the things we can to make sure we won't be hacked and keep out the large majority of attacks. We can't guarantee it any more than anyone else can, but we're certainly not slacking on this either.

      • AnonFeedbackJulissaSep 12, 2016 at 4:17 PM

        Who says it was Russia?

      • AnonFeedbackJulissaSep 12, 2016 at 4:18 PM

I hear you. I guess it's just on us to be extra vigilant with our info, now that we're going to be a major target of these guys.

      • AnonConfinementArturoSep 12, 2016 at 4:20 PM

Russia, as far as we can tell given that they're not owning up to it, hacked the DNC.

As in, a country's government hacked another's political organization for the purposes of influencing that country's election. Gamerg8ers are not Russia. They do not have the full resources available to them as a major world power, and they have less at stake for even trying to hack Imzy than influencing global politics.

      • KaelaSep 12, 2016 at 4:21 PM

First, I wouldn't expect anything to change in any major way. We became a target of them the day all the press decided to (incorrectly) declare us a "safe space," and we've already had plenty of people who tried to act maliciously on the site since then that we've easily dealt with.

Second, yes, be extra vigilant with your info. The very large majority of hacks that happen online don't happen because someone was literally able to "break" through the technology and get in—it happens because they were able to get access to user info some other way and use that to get in, wether it's because you share your password across accounts or whatever else. Again, 2FA is one of the biggest tools you can use to protect yourself.

      • willhicksSep 12, 2016 at 3:01 PM

Admit it Dan. You don't want us in your safe space!!!

      • DanSep 12, 2016 at 3:02 PM

        I just like good giphys!!!

      • AnonAmmoniaFredSep 12, 2016 at 3:07 PM

I believe you misunderstand the meaning of safe space. It does not mean a place for you to spew hatred. Frankly, it looks like they have more work to do, getting rid of one was just a start.

      • FlyingNarwhalSep 12, 2016 at 3:14 PM

Not wanting bigotry and harassment ≠ safe space

All I wanted to do was make a safe space for Gamergaters and now y'all are cyberbullying me.

      • AnonConfinementArturoSep 12, 2016 at 4:06 PM

Who the fuck said anything about a safe space? Just because Imzy won't tolerate the legal definition of harassment?

Take your misfired sarcasm, your shitty hate group, and go have a circle... pout on reddit.

      • AnonExplanationEvanSep 12, 2016 at 4:15 PM

Imzy: never claims to be a safe space
Alt-right echochamber: BUT MUH SAFE SPACE!!!

      • AnonAmmoniaFredSep 12, 2016 at 4:16 PM

All I wanted to do was make a safe space for Gamergaters and now y'all are cyberbullying me.

        Uh huh. Right.

Isn't it cute when kids learn a new word and then keep using it completely incorrectly?

      • AnonExplanationEvanSep 12, 2016 at 4:18 PM

That's the alt-right in a nutshell. They see progressives using all this newfangled language we came up with to describe the way the world works, and think they all they have to do to make fun of us is use said language in the wrong context.

    • AnonBuffersReeceSep 12, 2016 at 3:03 PM

lmao why would they even bother putting KIA on Imzy? Imzy is against harassment.

      [/giphy get out]

      get out

      • AnonExplanationEvanSep 12, 2016 at 3:11 PM

Buh-buh-but muh hatred of wimminfolks! Where else am I supposed to get it validated????

      • AnonBuffersReeceSep 12, 2016 at 3:15 PM

        Reddit?

      • willhicksSep 12, 2016 at 4:01 PM

That's against imzy's guidelines. Dan, DAANNNNN, they're bullying me.

      • AnonExplanationEvanSep 12, 2016 at 4:10 PM

Are you trying to get sympathy? Because you just look like an asshole.

  • TygrenierSep 12, 2016 at 3:14 PM

For the sake of understanding both sides of whatever the hell is going on here, I've spent the last 45 minutes reading about what gamergate is, the interactions between different groups, etc.

It feels like the post that was taken down was throwing a match towards a pile of gasoline-soaked palettes and then claiming "I didn't burn anything myself, so..."

  • AnonExplanationEvanSep 12, 2016 at 3:29 PM

"Offed"... he was banned from a website. You make it sound like the radical essjayfeminist crowd put out a hit on him or something.

    • AnonConfinementArturoSep 12, 2016 at 3:32 PM

When, in my experience, it's been the gamerg8ers who've called for people to be killed. Raped. Bombed.

    • AnonPrincipalsDeniseSep 12, 2016 at 3:48 PM

Buh buh buh what about my total and utter misunderstanding of how free speech works??
