Same here buddy! I hate talking to unknown people face to face... internet is easier to start out with and build a friendship so that when you do meet irl, it's much less awkward :)
Exactly! I have no problems with meeting people I know from Twitter or something, but complete strangers? NOPE. Unfortunately, most of my online friends live literally on the other side of the world, so, meeting them in person is kinda impossible. I would totally like to, though!
People still see such a strong distinction between 'real life' and 'the Internet' but social media has become so ubiquitous now that the walls between them no longer exist and the friendships we make online are just as real as the ones we started face to face!
The best friend I've ever had was one I'd only ever known online. Part of me regrets that the only time I was in the same room with her was at her funeral, but she was still the best person I've ever known, and so many people just don't understand how I can consider someone I never met a friend like that.
My longest online friendship dates back to 2003 when we met on StumbleUpon, and I appreciate this purely online friendship as much as my offline friendships.
I've also met my nesting partner online back in 1999. After a couple of months we met face to face and after yet on other half year or so of traveling back and forth (we were in different countries at the time), he moved in with me.
I met all my best friends online about 15 years ago. Most of them I have never met in person yet we have helped each other through all sorts of major life events and celebrations. I ended up living in the same town as one so we became irl friends and then another was hired to work with me in SLC so she moved here and now we are irl friends too.
Like someone else mentioned, I'm not great at just making friends. Online, you end up getting to know each other in very personal ways without going through the things that inhibit so many of us (awkwardness, anxiety, self-doubt, etc).
Of course they are! Especially for people like me who have trouble with making friends in real life. (I'm just better at writing than talking.)

I'm married to someone I met online, so I'm hoping online friendships are real... ;)
I know quite a few people I consider friends but we've only ever communicated online, that doesn't make the friendship fake, just long distance!
Exactly my thoughts! My irl friend does not agree but why wouldn't it be! I am glad i am not alone in this thought process

I am sorry that you had to go through that... i hope you will find new friends here

If I'm not true friends with my online friends, then I've never experienced true friendship in my entire life
I met my boyfriend on Tumblr and we haven't met IRL yet...so I kinda hope I actually know him. :P
