Bill Watterson Appreciation :)

I adore Calvin and Hobbes.
I adore everything about it.
More importantly, I believe that it is a deeply important collection of artwork in today's world.
@Kita suggested I channel my passion for this strip on Imzy!
So here's the first Calvin and Hobbes appreciation post.
Let's discuss this comic. What do you love? What does it mean for you?
The one I've chosen this time is just plain ol silliness!
But - I think it's important in terms of how it achieves its artistic potential.
People who love to discuss comics... let's discuss!

I LOVE Calvin and Hobbes! I have all the anthologies/books, whenever my mom sees one she buys it for me, so I have quite a collection now.
What I really like about Calvin is his exploratory/nomadic nature which leads to him never taking someones word over an actual experience. I think that it translates well into the real world lessons of "Question everything!" and "Experiencing something is more important then relying on what people say about that same thing".
I love them too - I have them all too!
Do you have the book where Watterson talks about and describes his process and some of the comics? It's so worth buying and reading to get a better sense of this world.
What an excellent way to put this: he never takes someone's word over an actual experience.
That's a great way to see it! I never thought about that!
Aaaaaah! This is one of my favorite C&H comics of all time, mostly for the far right panel on the middle row. It's an argument... it's escalating into name calling... and then Hobbes calls upon THE RULES OF PROPER BEHAVIOR before diving back into insults. It's flawless characterization.
We are going to get along SO WELL!
It's one of my favorites too - Watterson talks about how letting characters' personalities bounce back and forth into silliness is sometimes sooo much funnier than a one liner. And it is here! It's brilliant!
I kinda wish it went on for two more pages.
Me too. Granted, I feel that way about MOST C&H comics... but then, Watterson did always know how to end a thing before it went on too long. (Which, let me be clear, is something I will never stop affectionately resenting him for.)
:) I'm still crying some nights over that
This is a great comic. I wish @kita would come discuss it here!
