Do you decorate for the holidays?

  • A Very Silly Poll
  • Discussion

And if you do, is it for a specific holiday or do you decorate for them all? Would you share pictures of your favourite holidays you've decorated for.

I put no, but Middling made a really pretty winter wreath that we put up. And I put my menorah in the window at Chanukah... or I usually do. This year I have a cat that wasn't around last Chanukah and she might make that difficult. She makes candles in general difficult. We may have a cat with her tail on fire if we try putting the menorah in the window.

Decorating with cats is HARD. The first year I had my cat she was only 3 months old at Christmas and made it her mission to live in my tree. I'd come home from work and find all the decorations or the tree knocked over.

      • fluffywhitethingNov 27, 2016 at 2:31 PM

Growing up we had a cat named Loki (shoulda named him better, maybe) who went out of his way to try and set his tail on fire every Friday night. Only managed to do it twice, and we had to lock him up for hours until the candles burned out every week. The way that house was set up, there weren't that many doors that actually closed and shut except for the bathroom, though.

Never had to deal with trees, can't imagine that would be fun.

I think all cats are tricksters so they should all be named Loki. Poor cat having to be locked up though. :( I'm trying to find the photo of Lilly jumping out of the tree.

        tabby cat in christmas tree
Tabby Cat climbing out of christmas tree
tabby cat asleep under christmas tree

These are the photos of Lilly I was looking for. I think I need to redo my albums on Facebook into themes.

I have a new puppy going through the oral fixation phase some dogs go through, we're currently in debates about whether to stick to our standard Christmas tree tradition or go for something smaller... She'll eat all the ornaments if we're not careful!

      • fluffywhitethingNov 27, 2016 at 2:32 PM

I have no idea how any of this works... can you hang puppy toys on the bottom of the tree and put the real ornaments on top, or would the whole thing come crashing down?

      • Lawless_ResoluteNov 27, 2016 at 2:44 PM

Haha I like the idea! Although improve this dog, even if the tree doesn't fall down, she get through the toys and keep going until all the lower bows are gone too. We've already had to move pretty much everything off any tables and bookshelves she can get at... Hopefully this phase won't last much longer!

Sounds like my MIL's dog. He managed to actually make himself a dog door by chewing through one of the wooden doors in her house and he learned how to open his own crate.

I decorate for X-mas, and a little for Easter, otherwise not really.

    • mywitfailsmeNov 27, 2016 at 2:54 PM

What do you do for Easter? I myself only decorate for Christmas.

      • SilverLiningNov 27, 2016 at 3:01 PM

I have a witch I hang on my door, and some small deco pieces I put out. I don't do too much because we usually celebrate Easter in my parents' country house. We have a tradition here of basically decorating a buncha twigs with feathers and wooden painted eggs and stuff, and I probably would do that at home if I was ever home for the actual Easter weekend.

      • mywitfailsmeNov 27, 2016 at 3:11 PM

The decorating twigs with feathers sounds like an interesting tradition. Does it represent anything or just a family thing?

      • SilverLiningNov 27, 2016 at 3:31 PM

It's pretty standard here in Sweden and I think also in other parts of Europe. According to wikipedia it's possibly originally some kind of symbolic equivalence of the palm leaves Jesus was greeted with in Jerusalem, but I don't think anyone actually thinks of that anymore (if they ever did, heh). It's just a decoration thing :)

      • mywitfailsmeNov 27, 2016 at 4:07 PM

That's pretty cool. I'd never heard of that before today. (I'm Canadian). It's interesting to hear about different traditions. It makes sense for areas that don't have access to palm fronds to use twigs and feathers. I can see how they'd be similar looking for representation.

      • SilverLiningNov 27, 2016 at 4:45 PM

Yeah, it's always fun to hear about how things are celebrate elsewhere.

    • mywitfailsmeNov 27, 2016 at 4:33 PM

I hope your decorating turns out lovely!

  • JessicaNov 27, 2016 at 4:04 PM

We decorate for Christmas and Halloween. They're the only holidays I have any real attachment to.

    • mywitfailsmeNov 27, 2016 at 4:05 PM

I knew there had to be some Halloween decorators around! What do you do for Halloween?

      • JessicaNov 27, 2016 at 4:13 PMΔ

I love quirky, gothy, vintage style decorations. Here's a few I got this year. If you scroll down on this post, you'll see a black cat from a local artist. I have a few of his Halloween pieces, all painted on wood and designs based on vintage imagery. @Dan is more into gory zombies and bloody handprints. So he decorates outside and I decorate inside : )

Edit to add more links : )

        New Lights

Vintage style tiny candy paper bucket things.

Those were pretty cool. I liked the skeleton couple. I loved the black cat head. It's adorable and I'd hang it all year round.

      • JessicaNov 27, 2016 at 4:17 PM

Yeah, it's still up on the wall : )

      • mywitfailsmeNov 27, 2016 at 4:20 PM

I love that light too, that was really cool. Kinda feeds into my weird love of crows.

      • JessicaNov 27, 2016 at 4:24 PM

If you're on twitter, you should follow the crow bot : )

      • mywitfailsmeNov 27, 2016 at 4:27 PM

Ah! Thank you! Since I moved from my last town there hasn't been enough crows in my life!

  • wolfpurplechaiNov 27, 2016 at 2:37 PM
