New to Imzy, hi all!
Today I am mostly sat in my office sending code off to the university super computer and waiting for data to be churned out. It sounds cooler than it is...
What I should really be doing is preparing a presentation for a conference I'm going to in late November, and/or writing up the results I've got so far in preparation for publishing my first paper. Those things take more effort than mindlessly waiting for code to run however...
Hope you're all having a painless Monday!
EDIT: Also found a band that I'm really digging. Then discovered they broke up last year... but nevertheless I've got a new album to enjoy! For fans of twinkly emo/math rock/clean guitar noodling, have a listen to Tommy Boys.
A new imzynaut! Hello! :)
Hi! Glad to be here! :)
Welcome @ufig101!
Thank you! Very much enjoying the community so far!
Welcome!
Thanks a lot! :)
Heya ufig, welcome! What sort of presentation are you going to be doing at the conference, if I can ask?
Thank you! I'm a PhD student studying fluid mechanics, and my presentation will be on the stability of flows in a chemical vapour deposition reactor: a reactor that's used for growing ultra thin materials (we're talking a few atoms thick). The thing is it's a pretty huge conference so there's loads of people presenting; I've only got 13 mins to work with. Lots to cram in!
Oh cool! Good luck on your presentation! Also you should check out /science :)
Thank you, I definitely will!
Welcome, ufig! I love your screen name.
Thanks! Chose it back when System Of A Down were my favourite band :P
Tasty music choice. Who is your favorite now?
I love being asked this question :P My top 5 bands (in no particular order):
Biffy Clyro
Coheed & Cambria
Invalids
Fightstar
Blakfish
What are your favourites? I'm on a new music binge atm!
Haha. All-time favorite is Tool; Maynard never disappoints. Most recently, I've been listening to Gojira and Dew-Scented. I'm mostly an old punk who often drifts into the metal and heavy world, but any music that's lyrically driven with a solid baseline can grab my attention.
I'll listen to some of your favs and make some recs for you. :)
Well, I managed to flip my sleep schedule upside down and am sleeping most of my hours in the middle of the day? Thank god I work flexible hours.
Other than that, the weekend's been surprisingly productive. I got a lot of community things and writing things done, and managed to spit out an art.
Is that from habitually staying up till the early hours? I work flexible hours too and I feel like I'm in the minority of people in my work who AREN'T nocturnal haha.
Congrats on the productivity!
A large part of it is that I used to be able to fall asleep like a rock... and then an incident happened that led to bedbugs. I very quickly "learned" how to not sleep. :,D
The little bloodsucking pests are under control now, and I think my roomies and I squished the last one a few days ago. Still, it's become hard to sleep when your brain is convinced a ton of little insect legs are crawling all over you.

Open-minded online discussion about how ISIS isn't extreme Islam, but rather deviant Islam (and therefore, not Islam).
Going pretty well so far!
Nice to hear that some people are capable of having a healthy, respectful discussion about such a hot button topic. Was your view changed on anything in particular? Do you think you changed their view at all?
Yes! It is definitely nice to see. I think it was more of them realizing that the media has mislead them in certain areas, and me explaining my view (that ISIS is deviant), to which they were very open to listening to and admitting they should learn more about the issue.
In the end, what we all agreed on was knowledge is power, and we should try to know more.
By the way, welcome to Imzy! I hope you find many friendly, welcoming, and open-minded discussions here!
I slept last night! I was not /sleepless! ::happy dance::
Monday is chilly but sunny. Here, have doughnut kitten for a Monday!
Yayy sleeping! 💚 💤
Hey folks.
Morning already? Really?

Even cuter than I expected. That fox, tho! (wolf whistles)
Good morning, Eilis!
My monday is a tad lazy so far, and I'm also pretty anxious. The cat transportation company (yes, apparently that is a thing) is showing up tonight to pick up my cats and bring them to Utah.
One of my cats especially doesn't do well with stress, so I'm pretty worried for him. About five years ago he ended up getting really bad kidney stones due to stress from going to the vet, and had to have emergency surgery so he didn't die. My current vet assures me that he should be fine, but also mentions that it's something the driver should monitor.
Idk, hopefully I'm just being paranoid!
Oh, wow, exciting! The move. Poor kitties, I hope they do really well <3 <3 <3
I hope I'll get to see every one in late December or so, in Utah! (: (: (:
Woo that would be rad. Though I might head back east for Christmas, hopefully will still be in town when you're there :)
Oh yes, I think I might come after New Year's, rather than late December, anyway. It's for that indie go go travel, and someone mentioned I should wait for your guys' new offices (:
Oh right, new office! Yeah you totally should. Our current office is great, but it's hella cramped right now.
I feel for your meows. I respond in a similar manner. I'm about 2/3 cat, I think. A calm transporter might do the trick. They won't be picking up on your stress.
Moving is hard. Be good to yourself and try to have fun!
Thanks! And yeah, bringing the kitties out west is kinda the last big step with me moving. The rest is just going to be placing some orders for ikea furniture and such. I'm looking forward to settling in :)
Let's see. I somehow managed a three-day weekend. I never have the weekends off! (The joys of retail) So Saturday, my bf smoked a pork on the grill, and we had pulled pork for dinner. We just chillaxed all day. Yesterday, we went out for breakfast, and did a bit of shopping. I finally got a new phone because my old one was being a butthead. We came home and my bf and his brother put together our closet stuff that we've had for a year or so - we live in a house that was built in 1912, so there are no closets, just a hanging bar. So now we have some closet sort of thing. We went and got a Papa Murphy's, watched a couple episodes of Star Trek: TOS, and then watched the debate. Today, I slept til 9. I'm drinking coffee. And then I'm making some white chili with the leftover pork, because it's been cold enough that it's justttttt the right temperature for chili - we have a winter storm watch already. So yeah. Just hanging out, relaxing today.
Sounds like a good day! Can't say I've heard of white chilli before... Is it because you're using pork rather than beef? Things are cooling down here in the UK as well and I couldn't be happier. Was getting so fed up of the humidity. I can actually wear layers again! :D
Nope. It's because you don't add tomato sauce to it.
The photographic evidence of my rad Seattle weekend. Much geekery, sweet swag, gorgeous cosplay and much needed relaxation.
<3 !
