Made a new friend today!
This here little guy is a brand new calf, born sometime this week. We had to run cattle through the chute today before releasing them into the pasture for the summer. As he's so new, he didn't really know where to go and is still a little weak when it comes to walking.
So part of my job for the day was to lead him along or carry him when he was tiring out/didn't know where he was supposed to go. Once it came time to take the cattle up into the east pasture, we put him at my feet in the UTV so he didn't have to make the ~1 mile walk.
By this point, he had gotten accustomed to me. We got all the cattle up into the east pasture but this little guy started following me as I walked towards the gate. I went back and picked him up and put him near the pond where the rest of the cattle were migrating. Once his mama has gotten her fill, she'll be over to let him get some milk and energy so he can play with the 11 other little ones in the sun and grass.

oh he is so cute! and so new! What type of cow is he? Ps. Thanks so much for posting! I'm interested in farm life :) It's neat to see it from the eyes of a genuine farm owning person! I want to pet this calf <3
i haven't the faintest. the only breed of cow i know is holstein, the kind most commonly associated with milk, having black spots on white fur. i can tell you we have mocha cows, brown cows, off-white cows, black cows, and a red-but-leaning-closer-to-bronze bull. some have some random patches of other fur on them. they breed very interestingly; one of the new calves is white, born of a black cow and the red bull. kinda their own neapolitan thing going on.
and yes, petting the calf is good. he very much liked it, and grew from needing me to push him to just needing me to walk alongside him. but, since he's still weak and not used to walking, he would only get so far and then need to stop because he didn't know how to get around a hole or go over a small incline.
but he's got pour-on now (to prevent worms, lice, fleas, and ticks), an ear tag so we know which one he is as he grows, and another ear tag with some insecticide to keep bugs from eating up his ears or bothering his eyes and such. also, he got his shot to prevent blackleg, which is a kinda gross disease.
That is so adorable :) and that he wanted to stick by you! he's kind of a mocha color. But I don't know much about cows either. I would get attached to cows (or any animal) too much, I think, if I was a farmer.
not many people hanging out this afternoon :) nice to see you, @greenie and @colbyklaus !
quiet saturday.
I'm being lazy playing video games.
I meant to clean my car today but was hit with a wave of extreme laziness.
plus my car is really really really dirty.
my car is so, so dirty too! It's okay to be lazy some times :) What video games do you like?
I'm actually just playing WoW. Leveling a (second) paladin tank.
Although its no longer this bad, I haven't actually washed my car since it looked like this. There are also drops of mud inside my car, because I had the sunroof open:
wow! whenever I see a car like that, I only think 'that person must have just come from an epic adventure' :) My car is dirty on the inside, sadly. Just clutter. I've never played WoW! Hey I also have a subaru :D
yeah some guy at a gas station thought that someone else must have borrowed my car and went mudding with it. Nope, that was just how it looked after driving down the road I live on, during mud season.
The inside is also super cluttered. I think there might still be firewood in the trunk from like last fall.
hehe, sounds like my car. you can just say it's your er preparedness firewood!
and for the record, since there's nothing for comparison: i stand about 6'1" and the calf came up to about just above my knee.
also, he liked being petted behind the ears.
also also, he totally pooped on my shoe.
oh my gosh so tiny! I'd love more pictures if you get them
i've got a couple more of him, but i'll have to wait to upload 'em. my internet's pretty shit. it took about ten minutes just to upload this one.
Ouch. I have really shitty internet too. It helps for me if I resize the picture before trying to upload it, otherwise it can be a huge pain.
dawww hi there buddy! you look like an adorable new friend to have.
