New! Weekly Stickied Discussion Thread
Hello, Let's Grab Coffee friends! :)
We wanted to try out a sticked discussion post that would stay up for anywhere from a few days to all week. It's the first one, so we'll just play it by ear.
You can talk about anything here! We'll see where the conversation goes. But just to start it off, here's a pretty open question:
What is a hobby that you really want to try? Why do you think it appeals to you?

A nearby cafe had a sign from a sculptor offering inexpensive tutoring in drawing. I'll try to do that this week. Just never spent time on it, but I'd like to express myself visually. The first tools I want to develop are my hand & ink.
That sounds really cool.
Good luck!
New topic! If you were to try something new this week (big or small), what would it be?
I want to make some stuff with my new sewing machine. I honestly would have failed home economics in highschool if cooking and sewing were not technically the same course. My grandmother got frustrated with me when she tried to teach me how to sew as a kid before that (she was a wooden spoon across the knuckles kind of disciplinarian too. Youch!)
So basically I'm terrible at it. I figure I can teach myself though. Will make a couple tote bags first for practice (and environmental shopping!)
That sounds like a good plan! I have a sewing machine I only used to make curtains one time :/ I hope you have fun!!
Might keep it simple with Needle Felting until after I get the health thing sorted a bit. Don't want to be short on funds because I spent too much on fabric haha.
it's always easy to spend too much on a fun hobby, I know!!
I really want to learn bicycle riding these days. I know it is not a big deal but I hadn't learned when I was young. I am so envious of people riding along merrily in the coastline with their bikes :D
I bet you can learn that with some practice :)
Let us know how it goes!
I haven't cycled in years. I say go for it!
:)
I really want to learn how to quilt. I'm super impatient though so I'm not sure if I will be any good at it. Haha
I can never do it! I'm impatient too
Haha I'm the worst at being patient with anything. But it looks so awesome and you can create some really neat things. I have mad respect for quilters!
I only recently heard of this 'voat,' but am afraid to look
Ice cream is awesome!
I've never had a trainer. What are you trying to train for?
Fun is always my first go-to, too :) I can't remember what you are writing?
Voat is dreadful! I don't know what your history is with reddit but voat is for people who think reddit is too nice. It's filled with gun-loving xenophobes. One of the most popular communities on voat is concerned with shaming fat people. It's vile.
I'm training to be a superhero and fight crime. (Don't tell anyone!)
I'm trying to finish writing a stage play...
Ugh... I try not to form judgements on people but admittedly I had a peek into that place and was begging the universe for it to be satire.
I need a personal trainer again, best one I had was former military (something specialized, don't recall exactly) and he kicked my butt!
uhhhhhh wow. hardly any reddit history, but i have heard the tales. a most popular community for fat shaming?!?!?! I feel so sad.
Superhero and crime fighting is a good goal :) I won't tell. I want to train to be better at fighting too! Though I don't wish to fight anyone in real life, just to be able to know I could. How far along are you?
And that's awesome! I like stage plays. When it's finished, you should let us know how it's going with publishing or performing :)
Whoa, that would scare me :) :) perhaps into shape.
The best shape I was ever in was while training in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. I miss it so much but my body can't handle it right now. Maybe I'll take up Yoga to build flexibility and strength.
I was hoping the Trump nomination was a satire but it's happening. And it seems to have brought out the worst in humanity. That said, voat is a marginal community compared to reddit. But it makes me sad to see how many people have such a distorted worldview.
Hardly any reddit history? How'd you stumble upon Imzy? I figured most the folks here were reddit expats.
How far along am I in being a crimefighter? Well, I can't afford to build super-powersuits so I'm really just looking to maybe get bitten by some radioactive bug. Maybe get exposed to some gamma rays. I'm trying to befriend a mad genius scientist who might intentionally or unintentionally give me a boost in the whole superpowers department. Beyond that... um... some light cardio... ;-)
The worst in humanity was always there... We just have a media circus constantly pushing it in our faces now.
It's been bad in the U.S. for a while now, seems that in my own country (Canada) there is more and more of that manipulative media blitz B.S. every day. It is so frustrating to see.
My boyfriend sent me an invite. He was on reddit. Pretty funny really!
I'll send all radioactive bugs and mad genius scientists your way... :)
Mad genius bugs and radioactive scientists...
ugh!
I was a lite user of Reddit actually primarily lurked. Only made an account there a few months back.
I actually heard about Imzy on some tech blog that popped up in my newsfeed and went "Ooooooh"
That sounds cool! I am looking for something like this to get into that I can handle :)
I am glad you are here!
Aya, I also hope it is a satire and somebody forgot to bring the laugh track machine! Insanity!
Newer topic!!! What's your favorite holiday and why?
I'm not religious but I'm still a sucker for Christmas. So many awesome memories packaged into that holiday. Also I live those simple plain white Christmas lights. I firmly support keeping them up all year.
I love Christmas too! I'm a fan keeping up decorations as long as possible :)
My favorite holiday is Chinese New Year. It's a time when the family gathers to celebrate and eat a big feast together. Unfortunately, living in the US, the timing is a bit awkward, since it's usually in late January or February.
That sounds fun!! Does it have particular traditions?
The set of Chinese New Years traditions could probably fill a book. The ones that most people are familiar with would be the lion dance and firecrackers. Chinatowns get loud during CNY. Drums and explosions everywhere.
Before the new year, you're supposed to buy new clothes, get a haircut, and clean the house to usher in the new year. You should not get a haircut or sweep the house during the holiday (CNY lasts 15 days) because that will cut or sweep the good luck away.
During the festival, you wear red clothes and decorate the house with red papercuts, because red is a lucky color. Usually, on the front door, you hang a papercut of the character 福, which means "good fortune". However, the character is always hung upside down.
There are certain foods which are commonly eaten. Oranges are considered particularly lucky. Whole steamed fish is popular because the phrase 年年有余 (may every year have a surplus) sounds like 年年有鱼 (every year have a fish). Sticky rice cakes called nian gao (literally "year cakes") are often eaten. These come in both sweet and savory varieties. Finally on the lantern festival (the last day of the holiday) it is customary to eat tangtuan, which are glutinous rice balls stuffed with black sesame paste in a soup.
The aforementioned lantern festival is so called because people traditionally celebrate by lighting colorful (mostly red) paper lanterns. Some of these are sent into the sky like hot air balloons.
And last, but not least, it is customary for older relatives to give children red envelopes containing paper money as a New Years' gift. Money and wealth plays a big part in CNY. The traditional greeting during the holiday is 恭喜发财 which literally means "congratulations on getting rich".
All of these things are so cool! I want to try a year cake :)
Tangtuan sounds delicious too.
I like how colorful your new year sounds! Red is my favorite color!
I forgot about the lion dance; I have seen that before. But not in person.
