Daddy, why is the sky blue?
So, yesterday, my daughter asked me the inevitable question, "why is the sky blue?"
Being the science nerd I am, I came up with a quick and accurate, easy to understand answer for her. She loved it!! I'm pretty proud of myself lol
I told her:
Imagine there's a race. All of the colors live in the sun and they want you to see them. They are racing all at once straight toward you (light speed). But there's a problem. Blue light isn't very tall (short wave length). When the colors get to the sky (our atmosphere), the other colors have no problem jumping over the hurdles (particles in the air), but blue gets left behind up there. He kinda just bounces around for a while until he makes his way through (refraction). So we get to see him bouncing around. Seems like blue actually wins right??
Feel free to use this for your kids and share your thoughts on my answer LGC community!

This is really ingenious; it's in fact a short action-packed story for kids to pay attention to and is short enough that their attention wouldn't manage to wander. If ever I am in a position to be asked such a question, I'm definitely following your example--maybe even using "a smart man once said...." intro and just recounting your story.
Thank you, turqouiseyes! I appreciate the "a smart man once said" line lol. I hope she tells her friends and maybe even a teacher or two lol
This is great!
I have often explained complex ideas to kiddos with mixed success. I find this explanation is particularly brilliant!
Thanks! If you happen to use this then let me know how it goes!
Heehee certainly
A barefoot two year old was once standing in front of a refrigerator and asked why it was blowing out warm air. I got to explain that the fridge sucks all the warmness out of the food and blows it out the bottom.
Kids are so curious and literal with things, it's great!
I was so happy though that my explanation was basically correct :D
Absolutely adorable description of a rather complicated answer, bravo!
Fabulous didactic!
Thank you! I still often think about being a teacher, but I think I've found my dream job working in architecture. Maybe I could sub later in life after retirement.
