Question - how much is the discord channel a part of this community?
Just generally, how many people are on it, what do you do there, how useful is it to LGC?
How have the music listening parties gone?
How have the trivia games gone?
If anyone could take a guess of how many people use it per week and how many messages are sent per week ... I would be so grateful!

Uh oh -- dad's busting up the discord party!
I'm not the person to ask about the hard numbers but I'll say it is a LOT more active than I expected. And it's pretty engaging! The chat functions are really great -- it's easier to have a regular back-and-forth conversation than replying to someones comment on imzy and then waiting for the response notification. It's great for group discussions and private discussions. It's really got a life of its own. I remarked on how it would be great if it were somehow directly integrated into this community.
The music in the background really gives a sense that you're elsewhere.
I participated in one game of trivia and it was very fun -- though the difficulty level could probably be tweaked a little easier, IMHO.
It's a a very cool complement to the community here.
I'm not busting anything up, the whole thesis for imzy is that people can't do everything on any existing community platform and that we need a developer platform to cross this bridge. This is fascinating!
First time I logged on, it was revelatory. Music immediately started playing, people were chatting up a storm. It sounds silly but it really felt like I'd stumbled into a virtual coffee house. So simple yet so well executed. A great natural extension of the LGC community.
A little too good, TBH. I could easily waste so much time on there....
do people talk or type or both?
Hooray :) !
We haven't talked a ton, but people are real interested in starting to do that.
Tons of typing though
Hehe, I know you aren't. A bridge would be awesome!
it's been typing -- i've been wanting to try the voice function, set up a microphone and everything, but i haven't gotten to experience a voice thing yet.
me too!
Voice chat event trivia should be happening July 8!
Voice chat TRIVIA?!?!? EEEEEEEEEEEEEK!
When we're voice-chattin'.... are we also typing stuff?
hmm..... well I figured we could do trivia and people could shout things like "I can't believe I missed that!"
and then once trivia was over people could just chat.
Like an ice breaker! :)
... and then... DANCE PARTYYYYYYYY!!!!
Yessss!!!!!!
Haha!
It's a bit easier now, overall. There're also a bunch more question and you can just do specific categories.
Yes, I've heard you've augmented the beast!

It's where I first met @pyxamid
Dan, people love the discord community!!!
We have regulars over there who use it every day.
People use trivia and the radio every day.
We sometimes chat over things that happen on imzy over there, and other times ideas from discord come over here!
I'm not on right now but when I am I'll check on the numbers for you 😃
Do you think if we had a comparable product built into Imzy you would use it?
Oh for sure! We'd move on over there I believe, especially with similar features.
There are a few things I think that would be very important if we were to migrate. The biggest one is an API that we can build bots of top of. The bot I've built on top of Discord allows us to do some fun things we couldn't just vanilla Discord, and that kind of flexibility would be vital for a move--whether that be a move to euphoria or IRC or something built on top of Imzy.
Mind explaining what the bot does?
Sure. So we've got two bots, CoffeeBot and LGCBot. CoffeeBot is a mee6bot and I actually don't know a whole lot about it, other than that it can be used to control the radio.
LGCBot is the bot I wrote. The two big features of it right now are asking random conversation questions in trivia. If you're in the #lounge channel, you can do "!q" and it'll ask a random conversation question. This is nice because if it's quiet, we can just do that and get a conversation starting.
Trivia is basically what it sounds like. In the #trivia channel you can do "?trivia" and it'll start a game of trivia. It asks a question and gives hints, and then if you answer correctly you get a point. Score is tracked both per-round and cumulatively.
Where do the questions come from?
Stole them from the internet ;) Someone else had the idea and linked me to the list of questions. And then, additionally, people the the "Regulars" role can add questions to the DB.
People have added some marvelous questions.
You did a wonderful job with those bots, merry. They make the place amazing.
Thanks Pippin ;)
Damn autocorrect. Lol at your response merth.
Heck yes.
My perspective is that there's always someone there whenever I visit and it's super useful for bonding people to this community.
Yes - definitely about bonding with others and having someone to reach out to if you're lonely or just wanna chat. @Dan
I love what a great job you've done in offering that, @Eilis.
Okay, now I'm on my computer! I wouldn't say at all that you have to check Discord to be a part of this community.. I think maybe a couple hundred people have joined but at one time, only 20 to 50 are chatting. However, the discord is very vibrant and almost always chatting.
It's a great complement to this community because if you just need someone to talk to... in real time... it's there.
We have engaging trivia, radio, and a chat question bot for people.
Events over there are received well, though maybe only a dozen people might join in.
Every time I check back in, it seems like 50-100 messages have flown by!
It also has PM, which has been useful for us as we plan events over there as leaders. We have a leader planning channel, a NSFW channel, a civilian channel for government chat, and it's just overall a very vibrant place with its own little life.
I'd love to chat with people over there about moving over here if you ever have a similar function! I think it'd be awesome to be really connected here, as then the chat on the 'discord' esque space and the imzy feed could really talk back and forth to each other.
I'd say at least 20 people use it every day and just hang out. Maybe thousands of messages back and forth each week - but they can be anything from 'hi' to a full paragraph :)
Let me know if you have other questions!
SO SO HELPFUL!
Hooray! :)
I'm not sure about the number of messages. For all I know it could be a thousand a day!
I asked the members, they said "soooo many" haha
Feels like a thousand messages a day. Maybe more. :)
I can tell you how many messages since I haven't logged on all day. Give me a moment...
Seems about right 😃
Isn't discord used for gaming channels like teamspeak? My friends use it for League of legends and overwatch.
It is for gaming, but we use it as a chat community
Cool! You turned it into the new yahoo community chat rooms :)
Yeah you should try it sometime. It's quite special.
I will! Does everyone here use their imzy name?
Not always!
Most but not all.
Another note - If someone wanted to mess around and come up with their IDEAL product based on what you do with discord, it would be fascinating.
Like, does discord satisfy all of your needs?
I'll have to think on it. Connecting more directly with activity in imzy would be nice. I'll check back in when I'm on my computer!
Same.
Thanks! You know more than I do about how it works I think :)
Being able to follow the chat if you choose to while on imzy - maybe having it off to the side like you do with admin chats? Or at any rate, getting small updates about imzy activity, would be a nice connection.
It might also be cool to 'share' something directly from chat to imzy - or the other way around. I find myself screen shotting and posting a lot.
So I the main thing I like is the live chat with anyone and everyone who wants to be part of it. I also think the voice is nice but that is for a very limited few to use. The main feature I enjoy is live instant chat among each other.
Imzy offers something close, but in a little different style. Having people reply to different comments throws offer the conversation flow sometimes so having the live chat style is fun and nice.
I'd guess the number of active users is probably around twenty and the the number of messages is probably a couple of thousand a day but that is all coming just from my observations instead of any sort of real data.
Its definitely turned into a big part of the community. Kinda serves the purpose of the "shoutboxes" you'd find on crica 2005 message boards where you capture all the idle chatter no one feels like actually making a thread for.
huh! Shoutboxes! Never heard of that but that's totally what it's for! Chatter :) and occasionally important chatter, but just real-time live chatter.
Yeah. The trick is to make sure the important stuff that could pertain to the rest of the community still gets posted about cause otherwise a lot of people won't see it.
oh ok. cool!
Dan, you can actually join without having to post your name or anything and take a look for yourself. I can help you with anything discord related if wanted as well.
I don't run this channels but know my way around it very well and lead a few others.
I still think it would be neat to have Discord Channel Posts to show the live chat within Imzy. :)
I don't want to join community things on other platforms. It leads to problems :)
Understand that's why I was saying you could with anyone knowing. Just and option as you don't have to tie anything to the account to join. The server is open to all meaning no email or name needed.
Just a thought :)
