I feel like I've fallen into one of those bad alternate history novels where evil wins.

America is voting into office a man who's biggest endorsements came from the Klu Klux Klan and ISIS. A man who received no endorsement from any reputable journal, both Liberal and Conservative. A man so reprehensible that no living former president endorses him.
A man who can only garner the foreign support of other alt-right (i.e. white-supremacist) politicians who hope he succeeds to improve their odds of gaining power, or the leaders of adversary and enemy nations who hope he succeeds to justify their attempts to destroy us.

America is voting into office a man who is currently under investigation for ties to Russia, including the possibility that he has been influenced to consider Russian interests over our own. A man who has described Vladimir Putin, a "Democratically Elected" despot, as a strong leader (implying that he hopes to emulate him).

We are electing into our highest office a man who would dismantle the NATO agreement (an action both Liberals and Conservatives consider massively dangerous to both our allies and ourselves); which he does either because he likes to pretend he's some kind of mob boss demanding protection money, or because he's totally fine with one of our most dangerous adversaries gaining territory and setting the precedent of stomping on our foreign policy.

The United States of America -whose first constitutional amendment is the protection of free speech and religion- is electing to her highest office a man who has expressed the desire to ban a religious group from entering the nation and to expand libel laws so he can sue reporters who say mean things about him.

A threat that should be taken seriously, since the only thing potentially keeping his number of filed lawsuits fewer than his threatened lawsuits is either cowardice or a team of lawyers reminding him that he has no legal standing. America is voting into office a man who openly brags about committing sexual assault, and then has stated that one of his first acts as president would be to sue any woman who corroborated his story.

A man who, by his own words, has barged into the changing room of teenage girls so that they could not cover themselves in time for him to leer at them. A man who -until recently- was going to court for sexually assaulting a 13 year old girl, and only managed to get out of it after enough of his supporters threatened her life that she dropped the case out of fear.

We are electing a man who has fostered an environment of hate against his detractors to the point that his supporters shout "lügenpresse!" (the german word for "Lying press" that originally saw prominence with supporters of Adolf Hitler) and openly communicate that the want to hang or kill journalists who speak poorly of him. Who warped his supporters to the point of assaulting an unarmed, peaceful protester. Who has lamented over the lack of thuggish violence in our modern "politically correct" environment, and promised to legally protect those that revert to savagery on his behalf.

The person who will most likely hold the most powerful position in the free world is a man who both courts and distributes conspiracy theories with no basis in reality. Who lives in a world where every report is a lie, every video or document that contradicts him is non-existent, and everything that doesn't go his way is "rigged" by some grand system. A man who has become so paranoid at the supposed other, that he accuses every protester as being a paid agent, and forcefully removes anyone he sees as a potential threat to his narrative. A man who brazenly lies, even when contradicted by concrete evidence. A shyster who hopes that if he shouts a lie often enough it will become truth,

The modern equivalent of a snake oil salesman, with the power to end the world as we know it.

    Edit: Spelling and wording

      I can't believe it.

  • CallCenterHERONov 09, 2016 at 12:02 AM

I can't stand this country. I seriously can't stand living here anymore. So much bickering over trivial shit... then this happens. Let's just add insult to injury by electing a FUCKING RAPIST to office. And of course we have no right to complain that this guy is going to be representing our country. Goddamn. You thought George W. Bush was an embarrassment? Just you wait...

    • cavitycreepNov 09, 2016 at 6:29 AM

First thing I said to my girlfriend last night was the Bush thing. Except of embarrassment, I said "disaster".

  • purploonyNov 09, 2016 at 12:03 AM

I'm not from the US but I am heartbroken that this is happening - because it's happening to all of us. This is a nightmare. We stand with you.

  • hfwang18Nov 09, 2016 at 12:09 AM

That's the problem of the Rust Belt. It's the equivalent of the North in Brexit (under-educated former industrial workers who are anti-free trade and have a lot of prejudices). I think people knew that if Clinton would have any trouble, it would be there because of her support for free trade and diversity. Most polls showed that they wouldn't turn out because they're uneducated, but Trump found the "silent majority" and turned them out in insane numbers without a ground game.

I only hope that the defeats to unity and cooperation and global collaboration are only temporary.

  • dnb_trainNov 08, 2016 at 11:56 PM

this is probably the worst thing that could have happened. All this progress is just seems like it's for nothing now. I watched the results with a guy I'm seeing and we are terrified

  • Crusina_LuachraNov 08, 2016 at 11:24 PM

This is the worst year in my privlidged little life.

I lost my job, I lost my gamertag, brexit, and now this among other things.

    I am DROWNING in acholol.

    • EilisNov 08, 2016 at 11:25 PM

It's been the worst year for a lot of people I know. <3

The most sickening part is that I'm seeing everyone online campaigning for gay rights, labor rights, womens' rights... everyone's rights. But it's just like we don't fucking exist. Every election cycle, the republicans sweep both chambers and sometimes the presidency... and it's just like we're being kicked while we're already down.

  • Daredevil22Nov 09, 2016 at 2:08 AM

I am not even from the US but i am really scared for everyone. This is worse than a nightmare. Words can't describe how sad i am for all my friends. I...i don't know what else to say

Because GOD FORBID a minority get's $14K a year in welfare checks... fuck you for wanting to unionize and make more money. Worship your corporate overlords and slave away at your barely-livable job until you die

  • CallCenterHERONov 09, 2016 at 12:00 AM

It's no use. It's going to take another goddamn Great Depression to get people to realize just how fucked they are getting by the political and corporate elite

  • SleepymachineNov 08, 2016 at 11:33 PMΔ

Just wanna mention... at work, when people feared layoffs, we looked at who'd land worst & planned what to do.

Hopefully we can do that here too? Not just in this post, but over the next days & weeks. Like, if people are concerned about rising healthcare costs, or street/police violence, etc... I think it'd be useful to know, meet like-minded people & find out how we can mutually assist each other.

(Sorry if I'm unclear; haven't slept for a day. And gotta speak with people in real life now.. :)

    • EilisNov 08, 2016 at 11:36 PM

We can get through this if we support each other!

  • PorstuveNov 09, 2016 at 12:50 AM

I believe people have the right to vote for the candidate they believe in but I'm disappointed that a candidate who has founded his platform on division and hate has made it this far.

  • GlassSharkNov 08, 2016 at 11:26 PM

    I just can't believe this.

If a Trump presidency is what we're stuck with, I want to know what I can do to help minimize the damage. Does anyone have any advice for organizations I could get involved with?

    • EilisNov 08, 2016 at 11:26 PM

We've been brainstorming in Discord! We'd love to start a discussion thread on this and plan to in the morning. @Sleepymachine and @TheLizardQueen had ideas already!

    • SleepymachineNov 08, 2016 at 11:47 PMΔ

Organizing in real life can be very effective! So that could mean mutually educating ourselves & looking around at local organizations. To find ones which appear to do important things where we feel we can make an impact.

(BTW, a good rule of thumb: activism beyond 10 hrs/week often leads to burnout. And I think "chipping away" is a good mindset.)

      • SleepymachineNov 08, 2016 at 11:53 PM

BTW, if people do this, would be great for people to share their experiences of these orgs on Imzy. Questions, constructive critiques, etc. (While maintaining privacy.)

    • John91234Nov 09, 2016 at 1:09 AM

We'll wait for it, a conflict of interest will be uncovered soon enough

  • Salaam4EveryoneNov 09, 2016 at 12:25 AM

I'm stressed. I'm tired. I might be deported back to Ohio (Cali has given me asylum). But, never lose hope. Remember, whoever the president is, he or she will have to answer to the people, so keep your president accountable. This just gives the people of America more reason to be united against what we fear. So let's unite, and change America by changing ourselves. We will build better, kinder communities, and those communities will nurture better, kinder candidates for future generations.

Given we survive the next 4 years.

  • VaporWareNov 09, 2016 at 6:54 AM

trying to think of a useful thing to say about this.

There's been a lot of, frankly hyperbolic, fear about both Clinton and Trump this election, which has easily been among the worst I've witnessed in my entire life.

I said earlier, elsewhere, to remember that no matter how foul a picture someone paints of a person that it still portrays a person. Trump is an obstreperous buffoon, but he's still only a human being. The harm he might do /will/ be limited by the separation of powers in our nation. Even with the Republicans being the dominant party right now, they won't support every harebrained thing he tries to decide to haul off and do just because he ran on their ticket. They have interests that won't be served by much of his intent.

Communicate with your representatives. /Especially/ if you live in a state with Republican reps. Don't shun them because they aren't /your/ party. Make sure they know exactly what your issues are and how you feel about whatever policies are put forth during this administration, and remember: he cannot hold power forever. No matter how bad it gets, no matter how bad people will /fear/ it /might/ get, this, too, shall pass.

Try to understand that Trump was not elected simply because a lot of awful people agreed with his awful rhetoric. It's tempting to paint his supporters with the same brush we paint him, but that's been half the problem with this election season since it started: people factionalizing rather than attending the issues is what has allowed any of this to happen.

Most of his supporters, setting aside fringe loons like the KKK, support him /in spite/ of his buffoonery because he actively disrupts elements of our political structure that /are/ genuinely in need of a shakeup. It's the same reason many people supported Sanders during the primaries, wrapped up in a more obnoxious skin.

Remember that you still have a voice. Communicate with your representatives, /especially/ if you live in a place with Republican representatives. I cannot emphasize this enough. They still represent /you/, even if you don't share a political party.

Make sure they aren't misrepresenting you.

If ever there was a time to get politically savvy and involved, it's now.

    • TheLizardQueenNov 09, 2016 at 7:18 AM

      So much this.

  • CallCenterHERONov 08, 2016 at 11:59 PM

Every day, I lose more and more hope that us millennials are going to have any chance of retiring... or if we'll even make it that far before being WORKED TO DEATH

  • LinLeighNov 09, 2016 at 12:36 AM

I can't believe this is actually happening. I miss growing up thinking the world was on route to become a better place.

I'm getting scared for my sons future. Why does mankind fall towards hatred so easily.

  • stile99Nov 09, 2016 at 12:55 AM

I recall reading an article some months back, with numbers and polls and projections and all that fun stuff. It basically boiled down to this will be a 51/49 election. When it was Sanders/Trump, the 51 went to Sanders. When it was Clinton/Trump, the 51 went to Trump.

    Well. Here we are.

Someone asked what we can do to minimize the damage. Well, take the rest of the week to cry, scream, curse, and whatever else we need to do. Then do something we've not done for almost two decades.

    Come together.

The attitude of "I didn't vote for him, so he isn't MY president!" is exactly what brought us to this point. And it is 100% wrong, that's simply not how it works. Assuming this isn't some nightmare fueled by the media's desire to call the election with only 60-some percent of the votes counted, then he's president and refusing to accept that fact will NOT change that fact.

How can we minimize the damage? Work to make actual changes instead of just pretending if you ignore the problem, it will magically go away.

  • CallCenterHERONov 08, 2016 at 11:55 PM

The fact that we took this guy seriously as a candidate is disappointing. But now we're going to put him in the fucking White House. There goes any hope for things to get better for our generation for the next four years. I have full faith that Trump's going to wreck the economy just like Bush II

  • K_GlassNov 09, 2016 at 1:32 AM

I'm not an American but even from my vantage point this looks like a living nightmare.

    • EilisNov 09, 2016 at 8:34 AM

      It totally is one :(

  • John91234Nov 09, 2016 at 1:14 AM

Based on all the hateful troll comments on Facebook and Twitter, I felt as if these were bots all along and it wouldn't impact the election. Little to my knowledge, it's actually the voice of this new America that we live in. I'm astonished and surprised at this development. I love country and would still die for it but this definitely speaks to the decline of our society

  • CallCenterHERONov 09, 2016 at 12:03 AM

Sorry for all the comments. Just my unhinged rants. I'm happy to listen to anyone who will tell me it's all gonna be OK

    • dnb_trainNov 09, 2016 at 12:07 AM

America just voted a facist fucking moron in and the republicans control almost everything.

      • Salaam4EveryoneNov 09, 2016 at 12:33 AM

I found the ray of sunshine.

  • ChefBrittanyYumYumNov 09, 2016 at 3:18 AM

As a woman who has lived and worked in California, this beautiful and diverse state for my entire life, I am severely disappointed tonight. I love this country. It stands for freedom, diversity, doing the impossible, the voice of the people. But today I am paralyzed by this election. I am shocked and saddened. As the mother of a mixed child, and the partner of a wonderful man who is hard working and the son of immigrant parents, I am disappointed and frightened at the prospect of being under rule of such a hateful, impulsive man. He has played on the poverty of rural whites, pretending he is for them when he is not. He has awaken hate, he has given voice to men who have hurt women, he has told many children today he could send their parents away "back home." He can't feasibly do many things over night, but this sends a clear message to me about who lives in this country and I am not proud. You will see a very new political version of me from now on. My complacency was a mistake. You must work for what you believe in, and I will be doing so. For my daughter, for the poor (of all colors), for my community, for women, for the place I know and love. We are better than this. Yes, we are.

  • AspenLovesYouNov 09, 2016 at 9:03 AM

I truly hope that we are exactly as wrong about the future as we were in the afternoon of Nov. 8. I hope that Trump's presidency stuns us by its harmlessness, whether that means the rest of politicians prevent damage, or whether grass roots groups rise up like never before... I hope that we're proven wrong.

  • fluffywhitethingNov 08, 2016 at 11:36 PM

I can't right now. There is nothing I can say right now that is safe for anyone. So I shall post this instead.

    image-1478669776416.jpg

  • Twining_IvyNov 09, 2016 at 12:19 AM

There is so much I have to say, but like @fluffywhitething said, nothing and nowhere particularly safe for it. So instead:

    1. It's like watching the movie Idiocracy. And if following the short story that inspired it, Mars mission next!
    2. You're opening a Pandora's box, and those two little mail servers are just the start of a mess you will take decades to mop up.
    3. Cysts form in the body around the site of an infection that was surrounded and cutoff by the body's defences to prevent further damage to the system.
  • PorstuveNov 09, 2016 at 1:51 AM

    Holy shit it official. Damn

  • SARCAUSTICNov 09, 2016 at 2:07 AM

I just went out to get some food from the kitchen and saw my mum watching Trump's address to the nation. I nearly cried.

  • AlineybeanyNov 09, 2016 at 2:29 AM

Honestly, I feel like me and my family need to get out of here. Y'all know any countries besides Canada that could possibly accept a Mexican-American girl? lol

  • SarahSaetherNov 09, 2016 at 3:33 AM

I live in denmark, but still fearing he would start some wars or something.

  • CallCenterHERONov 09, 2016 at 12:03 AM

Oh my god... this guy is going to drag us straight into another war... further putting us in crippling debt and slaughtering thousands of innocent people over the almighty Oil of the middle east. We are fucked.
