What is "Let's Grab Coffee!"... ?

Oh, hello!
I'm Zork, a humble servant of this community that our fearless leader Lady @Eilis created long before I stumbled upon the scene.
Imzy encourages leaders to create official "WELCOME" posts for their communities -- but as some communities grow and new folks arrive, I think it can help to periodically Re-Welcome people to the community. I imagine it might be slightly overwhelming for newcomers not familiar with the "culture" of a community.
Particularly a community like LGC since we are not defined by the shared love of a single band, or a single television show, or a single film genre, or pictures of animals who think they're people.
LGC is many things to many people. A place to share art. A place to share stories. A place to share passions. A place to talk about the world we live in, and life in general.
A place to vent. A place to seek solace.
A place where you should feel free to be silly.
A place where you should feel free to be serious.
But perhaps most importantly, a place to love baby velociraptors that stay babies.

As LGC grows, it is constantly finding its voice. It is constantly evolving as new voices join the scene.
This Is Not A Mission Statement.
This is me, as a contributing leader of the community, stating what LGC means to me.
"Let's Grab Coffee!" is a community dedicated to trying to build a community. An inviting coffee shop with enough tables for everyone to have a seat. A community built on empathy and compassion and respecting other people. A sanctuary from the occasional brutality of the world out there.
We're human. (Mostly.) We try a lot of things and some things may work and some things may not, but we're going to keep working on making this a place you'll want to return to.
It's Friday morning as I'm writing this. I am looking forward to the weekend! I don't have any huge plans, but I love having time to focus on personal creative projects. And, inevitably, I'll be present on LGC. I hope to see you here.
Your virtua-friend, ZORK.

MOST IMPORTANTLY. BABY VELOCIRAPTORS THAT STAY BABIES.
That was my main takeaway from the post as well haha
it is the most important :)
HAHAHAHAHAHA.
Lol gets overused. But I literally lol'd.
Or perhaps more accurately GLALGOL: "Giggled Like A Little Girl Out Loud".
YAY!!!!!! That is the important thing!
I'd just like to say thank you for including us machine men, with machine minds and machine hearts!
Also, I note the use of both the serious AND silly tags up top; you must be feeling as addled as Sylvester. I know I am. Stayed up far too late tracking the referendum results and resulting reactions online.
It is SOBERING. I'm still reading up on the ramifications of this result.
sobering - what happened in the world out there??
Very much so. Did not see this result coming. It's certainly added fuel to other european leaders on the right calling for similar referendums, though the difficulty of reforming independent currencies might temper some of the public opinion.
ahhh, the people of the uk voted to leave the European Union...
isolation is... not so good...
what will happen??
oh wise knower of all things UK :P
Very very bad, I'd say. The resurgence of nativist sentiment in the west is very worrying; leads down dark roads very quickly.
This:
did they vote to leave... because they don't want new people in their country?
but didn't they also vote that they didn't like trump because he said mean things about other people?
Who is the UK right now? I don't watch the news. I live under a rock with coffee and kitties.
I'm quite concerned about the precedent this sets.
The last thing this world needs is to embrace xenophobia. This is incredibly short-sighted on so many fronts.
Yes, it doesn't make sense. This is why democracy doesn't work!
Haha (?)
( quietly joins you under rock with a bottle of wine and a bottle of scotch )
I really dislike the popular conception of nationalism as a natural result of human behavior and the implicit acceptance of national self-interest as the driving virtue in governments. I've read more and more arguments that treat those tenets as beyond reproach.
sips coffee
So how's the weather in your neck of the woods? I'm trying to stay in air-conditioned bubbles all day, as going outside feels like wading through soup.
lmho
going to get coffee myself
weather is hot and muggy. Espresso over ice!!!
all right! bringin the good stuff.
It gets to me, too. "Nationalism" and "exceptionalism" become these code words for "the rest of the world can burn for all we care". It is an egregiously selfish worldview -- and ultimately self-harming worldview.
sips tea
The weather's been a soupy mess all week! Taking sanctuary in AC bubbles is the only way to survive...
Ohh, that sounds lovely. The coffee, not the weather. I should figure out that whole 'cappuccino maker' thing one of these days, Mr. Coffee is starting to get a bit old and cranky.
Why are you sipping tea when you could be sipping scotch, buddy?
I say we need to get on those stillsuits sooner rather than later haha. This whole 'physical discomfort' thing is so outdated.
oh, i wish!!!!
The reactionaries are reacting.
Oh.... where?
The UK "leave" voters and the Trump voters. That's the problem right now... our side (the blue-haired, bracelet-wearing, kind people) is winning, and their side is on the decline and they see the end coming, and they're throwing their last hail-mary passes, hoping that the 4chan generation will catch the ball and run it in for a totalitarian touchdown. They're reacting to our being ahead in the game by throwing these passes.
My grandma was a Trump voter. She said she was only staying alive long enough so that she could vote for Trump. I guess she got her wish in that she got to vote for him in the primary.
I got double scotch, double wine under here.
oh.... oh my.
I didn't know it was quite this stark of an issue, but I tend to avoid political stuff.
How very peculiar the world is.
That sounds great. That's what I need right now, I think.
Quite.
come on over! (:
I know right... Was looking at the preliminary results and what areas voted leave/stay by what margins. The UK is going to have a lot to sort out going forward.
Hear hear!
woo!
that sylvester cat up there, that is literally me right now
I know!!!
:D :D :D :D frantically trying to run a coffeehouse with a speakeasy in the back....
So if I want an irish coffee, do I order that in the front or the back?
THE BACK. Come over here...

we're gonna advertise this new community here this evening!
Oh, neat! I totally wasn't expecting a serious answer, but now I'm subscribed!
Yeah!!!!
Good thing you have a little help from your friends...
Yes!!! @Zork @TheLizardQueen - and all the others, of course - so much love to you for helping to bring both these dreams into the real world.
Every little thing you do helps even more :)
@Zork... this is so wonderful! :) Thank you
Awesome. So glad I found you guys! :)
