Yeah, I remember trying to calculate don's salary negotiations myself back when those first few seasons were on.
Someone pointed out to me recently that Don is never stressed about money. Roger does stress about money, even though he has way more. Maybe because Don knows he can live without it?
Don really is NEVER stressed about money -- or concerned about being able to afford anything. Money's never an issue for Don and is often the easiest solution to his problems. But yes, I think it's also that Don came from nothing and knows how to live without a cent -- which was a lot easier to do in the New York City of that era!
You know the other thing that strikes me about it is that money problems are the root of a lot of tv drama (Sopranos, Breaking Bad, Weeds, Boardwalk, etc.)
That really sets it apart, in a lot of ways, or at least sets Don apart.
This is a VERY good point. And money problems are pretty universally relatable. Man starts doing something illegal so that he can afford to pay off medical bills: people can relate to this.
Mad Men was a nice... vacation from "money problems"... money wasn't a concern of the protagonist and so it wasn't ours.
Oh FUN -- what a great resource!
