Marvel writer driven off Twitter by sexist harassment

Working on a Marvel comic is a dream for many and a nightmare for some, an opportunity that lets you play with iconic superheroes while also becoming a target for vitriolic harassment. Mockingbird writer Chelsea Cain experienced the harsh side of this on Wednesday, driven off Twitter by abusive comments from fans who disliked the feminist message of her work.

Chelsea Cain's Mockingbird was fantastic. Smart and funny and original and--oh yeah--feminist. It's infuriating that the Dudley Dursleys of comics keep pulling this toxic crap on creators who dare to deviate from old-school T&A "fan service."

Reason number 1 that Imzy is better than Twitter - maybe some day women creators like Chelsea Cain will find community here where they won't be shouted down by idiots.

Meanwhile, there's a massive untapped audience for queer superhero fanfic and art, and people are throwing money at indie comics by women on Kickstarter. The most popular cartoonist in America is Raina Telgemeier, whose comics are aimed at 12-year-old girls.

Yes, it only took them a few decades to realize they could also sell to women, even though manga sales have been huge in that demo. The idea that it's the customer's job to reward them for making (in some cases) half-hearted efforts suggests they see what they're doing as groundbreaking instead of embarrassingly late to the party.

This is heartbreaking. I am always hopeful that people will be better and will learn to treat each other right. Guess it'll be a rough road getting there.
